Pinner v St Albans Cricket Club 3XI on Sat 03 Sep 2022 at 12:30
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 8 wickets

Match report The threes have finished fifth on the Herts League Division 8A table after falling to defeat in the final fixture of the season.

Pinner were the hosts on this occasion. Having secured promotion, they were keen to win to ensure they went up as champions. For Saints, motivation was drawn from a sometimes acrimonious defeat in the reverse fixture.

Considerable time was spent deciding what to do if the toss was won - and it was, with Saints choosing to bat first, hoping to compile a score that would put pressure on the hosts' batting.

Rudlin and West opened up for Saints, resisting Pinner's strong bowling lineup, the way to build a platform. 34 was on the board when Rudlin was out for 16. The forecast had suggested little chance of rain, however dark clouds were on the horizon. Sure enough, darkness descended upon the ground and rain arrived, by the bucketload. The covers were on quickly, but the rain carried on for some time. A waiting game began, with Saints on a patient 44/1 after 15 overs.

League rules dictate that time lost during the course of the first innings reduces the overs available to both teams, which puts the team batting first at a disadvantage. The outfield was wet enough to delay the resumption considerably (and perhaps a little longer than necessary). The consequence was that, after nearly two hours off the field, the game was now a 26 overs a side fixture, a crushing, game-changing modification.

With just 11 overs remaining, there was no alternative but to attempt to pick up the run rate. This proved a tough ask, particularly once West was out for 31. Pinner's slow bowlers were able to control things well, forcing risks to be taken on what was now a sticky wicket. In the end Saints failed to bat through the remaining overs and were dismissed for a meagre 83.

The threes have managed to scrap to victory over recent weeks, but defending such a total always seemed unlikely. Bowlers were given short spells as wickets were sought. Smith was clearly the pick of the bowlers, sacrificing speed for accuracy, and his six over spell yielded 2/14. Unfortunately his two wickets were the sum of Pinner's dismissals, as Baker and Ramachandran calmly took their side to victory.

Ideally the Threes would have left Pinner without them celebrating a championship victory, though that is what they deservedly achieved. Saints were universally pleased to escape back to Clarence Park to celebrate our own three Herts League promotions.

Over the course of 2022, the Threes have managed 10 wins, and a tie. With stronger lineups than in previous seasons they might have expected to have done better than finish fifth, but in a few key moments the team have fluffed their lines. 2023 must surely be the year for the Threes to be promoted?
