St Albans Cricket Club 1XI v Old Albanian 1 on Sat 11 Jun 2022 at 12:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets

Match report Following a string of good performances St Albans looked to make it 4 on the bounce, hosting local rivals Old Albanians. Skipper Regan lost the toss and the yellows were sent into the field, something that had served us well the previous 3 weeks.

Baylis suitably sporting the yellow wristband opened up, bowling at his mate who was opening up for OAs. After snicking him off first ball the friendship may now be in a slightly tricky situation. Adshead opened up from the other end and with a juicy half volley outside off claimed the number 3 in his first over, well taken by Mulvaney at backward point. OAs despite this were unfazed and continued to play attacking shots but quick wickets from Jamie Regan and Mulvaney left them in a precarious position at 50-4. Tight bowling from Mulvaney, Regan and Capaldi helped to stem the flow of runs with OAs really struggling to get the ball away. A huge shout out to Mude who took a genuinely unbelievable grab off the inside edge of the number 5, given not out.

Amongst this passage of play Baylis casually threw one over the rope for 6, Adshead shelled what can only be described as a sitter, and despite smashing leg stump in his follow through, the OAs number 6 survived a huge hit wicket appeal. Some tight bowling and improved fielding rewarded Baylis, Capaldi and Mulvaney with additional wickets and OAs finished on 196-8.

New opening partnership of Regan squared strode to the middle confident of chasing down the total on what looked a good pitch. Their judgement appeared correct with some lovely strokes and quick running leading the Saints to a ton plus partnership to open proceedings, both batsmen faultless up to this point. By the time Jamie (54) and Joe (62) had fallen, OAs heads had gone down due to the excellent platform set by the opening pair. However, the show was far from over. Promoted from 7, Steven Perrin rolled in at 3 in search of runs. A juicy full toss first up thudded into the pads. Heart-in-mouth moment for the onlooking crowd. In fairness after this Perrin (32 red) batted very sensibly whilst Bancroft (30) took a more attacking role. All that was left was for Perrin and Capaldi to finish the job and seal the 4th win on the bounce for the yellows.

Man of the match: Josh Mulvaney; Abbey aquatics shot of the day: Steve Perrin; DoD: Dan Baylis
