St Margaretsbury I v St Albans Cricket Club 1XI on Sat 16 Jul 2022 at 12:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 29 runs

Match report After a successful run of fixtures, spirits were high as a somewhat new-look 1s travelled to St Margaretsbury looking to continue the good form.

8 late arrivals and 1 fielding warm-up in the shade later, the coin was tossed. Perhaps prophetic of the team’s fortunes, stand-in skipper Matt Howeson lost the toss and Saints were put into the field amid the tropical East Hertfordshire conditions. As usual skipper Regan watched on from afar, trading his usual cricketing duties for baby-sitting Cooper the dog (Joshy take notes) as St.Margs started their innings.

Unfortunately, some sub-standard early fielding and the odd punished loose delivery meant the oppo started well and raced to 70/1 at the first (of many) drinks breaks, Mulvaney making the only breakthrough assisted by some sharp glovework from Bancroft.

Saints, revitalised by an exceptional tropical squash, improved after drinks as wickets began to fall and the run-scoring was restricted. A strong second session, epitomised by a flawless Bancroft performance behind the stumps, meant St Margaretsbury were in trouble at 130/6; however, a combination of some counter-attacking tail end batting and saints drifting in the field meant Margs were able to move towards a more competitive total. A poor final 15 overs allowed them to post 228 from their 50 and set St Albans a challenging but chaseable target.

As the rest of the team fought for shade, Regan and Hammer began the pursuit of 228. A positive start, coupled with some well-struck boundaries, showed good signs for the chase ahead. However, once Hammer fell to a smart onehanded catch and Jamie departed soon after, there was rebuilding to do. Runs proved harder to come by in the middle overs and Saints began to slip behind the run rate, reaching 90/2 from 25 overs. Bancroft, top scorer on the day, reached 50 but was dismissed soon after; Saints now had work to do but were still in contention. Sadly, wickets began to fall at regular and frequent intervals and the required run rate drifted ever further from reach. Saints, leaving themselves too much to do in the closing overs, both in terms of runs required and wickets in hand, ultimately came up 25 runs short.

Unfortunately, a below-par performance meant aspirations of 30 points were ultimately in vain. Saints were left red faced, not just from the sunburn, leaving themselves with work to do in the coming weeks in order to regain a commanding position in the league.
