Holtwhite Trinibis II v St Albans Cricket Club 2XI on Sat 14 May 2022 at 12:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 77 runs
Match report
11:00am and the sun baked down on the outfield at the Holtwhites Sports and Social Club, however the sun was not shining on the St Albans 2s warm up – leading to the first Coulman mini-meltdown. Chaz Smith and James Caswell managed to evade the Warnock esque dressing down, not down to exemplary fielding but because Chaz was still in St Albans having told long suffering wife Nichola that he didn’t need to leave until 11:00. Luckily for St Albans 2XI this would be the one and only dressing down of the day.
Continuing his 100% record at the toss, Coulman won (tails) and decided that St Albans would have a bat on what was a used pitch and looked like it would only get worse.
The St Albans opening pair of Sharif and Hounslow got off to a flier, duly tucking into some rusty bowling in the first few overs. Hounslow carrying on his 2022 trademark of getting off the mark with a 6! This fast run rate was not to last though, as the Holtwhites bowlers began to find their areas; scoring runs seemed difficult on a two-paced pitch. Hounslow departed to a very smart catch in the gully, followed swiftly by Howeson and Coulman and the St Albans innings was looking on the edge of a collapse.
Sharif had batted very calmly and steadily and had got himself in on what was a tough pitch, with Rosson at the crease it looked like the rebuilding was going well with Sharif and Rosson batting calmly. However, with the introduction of the spinner Sharif decided to do his best impression of skipper Coulman and stupidly got himself out trying to hit the spinner into the bowling green.
Up stepped Caswell and Rosson to steady ship, and steady the ship they did. Both batted watchfully to see off the good bowling of the Holtwhties seamers and rotated the strike well – barring the frankly suicidal running of Caswell who managed to max out his fines in running alone. 2 clear run outs should have been taken by Holtwhites, but the cricket gods were shining down on the pair. As the innings went on the Rosson and Caswell began to dispatch some tired bowling to the boundary and scoreboard began to motor.
As the good work carried on by Rosson and Caswell a special mention must go to Hounslow, Smith and Coulman for their dedication to lapping whist the two were at the crease – clearly this was a crucial aspect of the 100+ partnership, with Rosson ending on a brilliant 88 and Caswell unbeaten on 52.
St Albans finished on what was clearly and above par score of 218.
From the first few overs of the Holtwhites innings the result almost felt guaranteed. Dan Baylis (10-3-23-5) took and impressive 4 wickets in his first 5 overs - blowing away the top order and assisted very well by Smith (8-1-29-1) at the other end who bowled in some great areas on the two-paced pitch.
The Holtwhites number 4 showed some resistance and the runs started to come a little easier. Especially when Coulman (4-0-31-0) decided he needed to replace the tidy Speller (5-1-11-0), with one over going for an impressive 16. West (9-0-28-1) and Hounslow (7.3-3-16-3) both bowled tidily and restricted the runs well.
Even though Holtwhites never looked in danger of the 219 needed, a good partnership between their 4 and 8 did put some pressure on the St Albans bowling attack. Up stepped Baylis once more to put and end to this partnership. Richard O’Toole once again providing the St Columba’s Holy Moment of the Match by pulling off a screamer in the gully (akin to Dwayne Leverock) to award Dan with his first 5fer.
With little else in the Holtwhites locker, Hounslow took the final wickets and St Albans were awarded with their first 30 points of the season. A close to perfect display by the St Albans 2XI. Rosson, Caswell and Sharif stepping up with the bat and Baylis leading a strong bowling attack assisted by good fielding. On to Amptill for hopefully another 30 points.
MOTM – Dan Baylis (much to Rosson's dismay)
