Hatfield Hyde v St Albans Cricket Club 2XI on Sat 11 Jun 2022 at 12:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost
Match report
Sacc Vs Hatfield Hyde
The sunshine had once more returned to bask Hertfordshire in quintessential English summer. Unfortunately the same couldn’t be said for the 2s winning streak.
After a solid warm up and a fairly controversial game of American football, Simon White arrived at Hatfield and Crusaders. As a veteran of arriving at incorrect grounds this did not phase him and he trundled his way over to Hatfield Hyde to meet up with his side.
Carrying on the 100% form at the toss (tails) Coulman decided to have a bat – after some strong advise from Howeson on arrival. The pitch did not look fantastic, moss making up for a large proportion of the coverage. But surely it would only get worse.
Openers West and Sharif tucked away a couple of boundaries to begin with and everything looked okay for the Saints. Unfortunately Sharif fell to an outstanding catch in the gully – Richard O’Toole eat your heart out. This brought Howeson to the crease to carry on from his personal best 168*. However, cricket is a humbling game. After facing a few balls he decided enough was enough and he better get going. A wide one served up to him unfortunately hit a good patch of the aforementioned moss and stayed low. The swooshing blade of Howeson chopped it onto the stumps. His last three innings a reminder that cricket is never easy: 0-168*-0.
This brought skipper Coulman to the crease to steady ship alongside West. The pair began to do this nicely, batting watchfully on a tough pitch (the decision at the toss looking as good as England’s decision at Trent Bridge the day before). West was then undone by another pea-roller – striking just below the sponsors logo. Things were not looking good for the 2s.
Rudders – on his perennial crusade to play in every St Albans league side – now joined Coulman at the crease. Things began nicely with a couple of boundaries and good running, maybe it was this pair to rescue the innings?
Unfortunately not, Coulman once again bowled. Drawing likeliness to his old schoolmate Jonny Bairstow in his inability to protect his stumps. Murray then came and went, St Albans looking in danger of not reaching triple figures.
Nick Ralfe joined Rudlin at the crease and, having crushed 3 nice boundaries, looked in good form. Unfortunately after expertly guiding one through the gully for 4, the next ball he gave the slip some catching practice.
Rudders and White looked to try to get a defendable total on the board. Rudlin unfortunately falling shortly after White had joined him. Sammy Kumar, the next man in, dug in to look to bat the overs.
The pair batted very well in the conditions. Watchful but despatching any poor ball that came along, showing the top order what to do. The pair put on a crucial 50 partnership and one that gave the Saints a sniff at getting something from the game. Unfortunately trying to launch the spinner into the car park proved the downfall of Sammy.
With a first ball duck for Curran having professed his batting abilities to anyone willing to listen on the boundary, and Smith sheparding one onto his stumps White was left stranded on a highly valuable 33 and the 2s all out for 137. A defendable target given the pitch.
A big display in the field was needed and it got off to a strong start. Joey Curran and Charlie Smith bowling excellently with the new ball. Causing no end of troubles for the top order batsmen, unlucky to not sneak the low ones through or find the edges that Hatfield had found in the 1st innings.
Smith got the breakthrough to the safe hands of Rudlin and St Alban’s could smell blood. The scoreboard stagnant and the left arm right arm pair putting huge pressure on the batsmen. Curran finally got his man in his 7th over, who then outrageously began screaming profanities at the Ciaran after raising his finger to an LBW shout.
White and Sammy carried on their partnership with the bat into their bowling and carried on the good work from the openers. Sammy taking a wicket in his first over. St Albans were now on top with Hatfield 20-odd for 3.
However, with a small total on the board any partnership could threaten the bowling side. Hatfield knew how to bat on this wicket; they soaked up the good bowling and made sure they got away the poor balls. St Albans though, were always in it with a couple of wickets.
Again the pendulum swung in St Albans favour, Kumar and White striking again removing the in form pair. White lucky that Coulman kept him at slip to Kumar, a top edge almost landing on the skippers head as he ran around in circles looking for the ball.
Hatfield Hyde were 90-6, the game truly in the balance. The 7 and 8 then took the game away from the 2s. Some good hitting and some fortune meant they saw the home side through. A good display of bowling was, in the end, not good enough to defend the small total.
Overall, the batting let the side down. But, the batting of Kumar and White kept them in the fight. The totals were in fact almost identical after the same amount of overs. A day of what-could-have-beens.
Back to winning ways at CP next weekend beckons as the 2s welcome Shenley Village.
