Ickenham CC v St Albans Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI on Sun 08 May 2022 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 6 wickets
Match report
The Sunday 1XI faced a trip to Ickenham CC to commence their Chess Valley campaign under new skipper Zach. The previous nights social meant a slow start to the morning was unsurprising, but 15 minutes before the scheduled start, the new skipper arrived to give his team some much needed sit down time by winning the toss and following the Sunday custom of batting first.
Ali and Stu were sent out to see off the new ball and started steadily prior to Stu getting a good ball off their overseas Kiwi and snicking through to the keeper. Zach then joined Ali to set about rebuilding, and the pair worked in tandem to see off the next 15 overs where they were able to put on 81 runs - Zach attacking the spinners whilst Ali stood firm and looked to rotate strike. The skipper departed for 44 with the introduction of their first team opener, and young gun Josh Mulvaney joined Ali.
Another strong partnership was built, with Josh pushing the game forward with some good hitting and running between the wickets before he had one bail removed by their reintroduced opening bowler, coming up one run short of his 50.
Two balls later, Ali was out for a solid 70 caught trying to accelerate, and with 12 overs remaining the score lay at 192-4. Wickets started to fall as we tried to force the total up to a defendable score on a ground which offered a number of short boundaries.
George contributed a quick 12, bringing Joe Curran to the crease where he provided us all with some entertainment as he despatched the ball over the Ickenham pavilion, and proceeded to remonstrate the price he had been assigned on this years SACC fantasy league - far too cheap in his eyes.
Fazlay hit the ball well in his brief stint, as did Dan with a quite extraordinary swatted 6 in the closing stages.
Altaf and Dan also had the sidelines in stitches, as a comical run out chance lead to both batsman ending up at the same end, before Altaf’s attempts to turn back and find safe ground saw him slip and tumble to the floor crawling to safety in panic. The moment of the day by some margin.
With 269 on the board, an around par score on this ground, the chase was off to a good start for the opposition as they raced to 71-1 off the first 10, as the openers despatched the bad balls on offer to the rope with ease. Aidan had found his line and length in the second half of his spell, beating the bat on many occasions, and had removed the opener accompanying their overseas - but the danger man had just escaped his grasp as he was dropped on 40 at point after chasing a wide one. This would turn out to be the first of many chances spurned, as he was dropped a further 3 times whilst also having a very good looking LBW shout waved away off of Josh’s bowling. He would go on to make 134 not out, and undoubtedly propelled his team to victory.
Dan, George, Josh and Aidan all shared the wickets, but the platform Ickenham had built in the early stages had meant they could see off the squeeze provided by Josh, George and Dan in the middle overs in which the majority of our chances came but couldn’t take.
A disappointing result, but amongst it some good individual displays to take positives from for the rest of the season. The only way is up for the Sunday 1XI, and will be back at it in June to get their first win of the West era on the board.
