St Albans Cricket Club 5XI v Abbotts Langley IV on Sat 11 Jun 2022 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 4wkts

Match report The Club XI, lead by Vikas Narula, were put into the field by Abbots for their second visit of the season to the Astro at Sandpit Lane.

Opening bowlers Tom Townend and Ben Killner kept a tight line, and well supported by everyone in the field, Abbots were struggling to score. The pressure continued to build and the extra bounce from Tom brought the first breakthrough. Bowlers were rotated and wickets fell at regular intervals. At 92-7 in the 30th over St Albans were expecting to keep Abbots below 150. However 9th batter Konda did not hang around smashing some huge sixes. Tom Townend finally found the perfect yorker to end the cameo of 49 (and stop any further damage to his bowling figures!). A target of 170 was set – and the team felt it was well within reach, and after their Tavah wrap at the innings break, were quietly confident.

However in reply St Albans were immediately in trouble 2 wickets down in the 5th over with only 2 runs off the bat. Oliver Brown was unlucky to receive a swinging yorker first ball, and John Webber caught behind for 1. Matt Shadwick and Naz Islam (19) took their time to rebuild, and saw off the opening bowlers taking St Albans to 20-2 after 10 overs. Thankfully the first bowling change brought some runs. Konda fresh from his batting cameo was very generous with his bowling, giving away 29 runs from his short 2 over spell.
Abbots found the perfect replacement, K Thomas, who took 2 quick wickets, working in tandem with Fewster (8-23-1), suddenly St Albans found themselves at 66-5 at drinks. Matt Shadwick and Tom Townend played carefully, took their chances, ran hard and kept the scorebook ticking over. Matt punished anything lose and pushed the field into making several errors. At 111-5 Tom was tiring, so changed his approach, hitting 2 huge sixes and finishing with 29. St Albans accelerated quickly to the target, with Matt Shadwick seeing the game home with a magnificent match winning 78*. St Albans finishing on 171-6.
