Watford Town 5XI v St Albans Cricket Club 5XI on Sat 16 Jul 2022 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won By 4 Wickets

Match report A scorching day in Watford brought about a rare away day for the 5XI. Melling lost the toss and Watford elected to bat on a dry wicket with a tyre mark running through the middle of it.
With the pitch and overhead conditions, the Fins opened the bowling for St Albans. Finlay Killner took the new ball and began probing the edge of the Watford bats and eventually found the break through thanks to an ‘alert’ catch by Tom Cocks in the gully. At the other end Fin McNab’s leg breaks had the Watford batsman in all sorts of trouble. A 6 over opening spell conceding only 7 runs and finding second wicket after breaking through the defences of the Watford number 3. In the heat it was tough going for both bowlers and batters alike. The Kleiner-Man twins replaced the opening pair and both produce tight spells of bowling that unluckily without reward. Josh was particularly unlucky to have an lbw much to the amazement of all. With the home side reaching the halfway mark with only 52 on the board the decision to bat first looked like an interesting one with runs hard to come by. A firery spell from Sud brought about the third wicket, a quick delivery cramping the batsman for room and spooning a catch to Nathan running across at mid on.
The next pair settled in and batted well, finding the gaps in the face of some good St Albans bowling. The pair took the score past 200 before Matt ‘The Shadow’ Shadwick clean bowled the opener on the last ball of the innings. Watford finishing on a very respectable 215 for 4.

In response openers Townend and Shadwick fell early to good catches. Tom Cocks responded racing to 30 with some attacking stroke play, dispatching any lose deliveries with ease to all parts of the ground. Cocks and Josh Kleiner-Mann steadied the ship and began to kick on towards the target. Cocks soon went to a well-deserved 50, his second in as many games, eventually departing for 71. Two quicker wickets brought Hugo Thomas to the crease, with St Albans needing 70 off the last 10 there was no better man for the job. Hugo soon set about dispatching the bowling to the boundary and Josh continued on his merry way, soon also passing 50. They soon brought St Albans within touching distance of victory before Josh departed for a brilliant 61. Sud arrived at the crease itching to put his ‘sit back and slap the ball’ in tactic into practice and saw St Albans home to victory by 4 wickets, Hugo finishing on 34*.
