St Albans Cricket Club 5XI v Gully Boys XI on Sat 09 Jul 2022 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost By 74 Runs

Match report With the number of changes to line-ups in the league sides meaning that there were several promotions up from the 5XI, the eventual starters could only be described as having a notable blend of youth and experience.

After losing the toss and being put into the field, the youth opened the bowling with Tom Banks and Riley Curtis achieving great lines and swing to take 3 early wickets between them and leave Gully Boys 49-3 after the first 8 overs. Vikas
Narula came on and immediately took the 4th wicket, caught behind, but then the 5th wicket partnership took hold.

With the dry and hard outfield combined with the ball constantly finding gaps, boundaries came quickly and the scoring soared along, despite some high quality bowling from Narula, Alexis Awonuga, Ben Killner, Fin McNab and Vijay. A couple of really tough chances went down in the field, but mostly the batting was excellent, if a little fortunate. 19 overs and 160 runs later, one of the batters finally skied a ball off the bowling of Jonathan Harris and Tom Cocks took the catch on the run behind the stumps to break the partnership.

Although the pace slowed, the remaining batter continued to score and brought up his century before retiring to allow his lower order to have a go. Pankaj Bhasin bowled some tempting spin, but didn’t manage to take any wickets, however Charlie Bavister came on and took 2 to end with strong figures of 2-12 off 4 overs, and the opposition ended with 289.Two drinks breaks due to the sweltering heat, and having to fetch the ball out of the bushes a few times meant that the innings had taken 3.5 hours and Saints were keen to kick off the mammoth chase. Harris and Bavister opened the batting and quickly set up the platform with a 49 run opening partnership in 6 overs before both fell, along with Banks and Awonuga to leave 5XI 50-4.

Skipper Cocks and Curtis set about rebuilding the innings and kept the scoring moving just below the asking rate. Cocks brought up his first 50 for the club off the penultimate ball before drinks, and the 100 run partnership came up soon
afterwards before Cocks fell to a diving catch at long off for 61. Killner picked up the scoring responsibilities with a quick 30, however the wickets kept coming as the required scoring rate grew. Curtis went for a 22 trying to accelerate after having played a crucial anchor role, Killner was run out, McNab was bowled for 17 and then Narula and Vijay fell quickly to leave 5XI bowled out for 215.

Although the margin of loss appeared high, 215 remains a good score for a young 5XI side, and the loss was essentially due to two high quality batters in their side. Some young Saints players gave a really fantastic showing of themselves and are clearly set for fruitful careers at the club.
