St Albans Cricket Club 6XI v Rickmansworth V on Sat 23 Jul 2022 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 8 wickets
Match report
The prospect of the 6XI getting a game looked bleak at 9pm on Saturday morning with Rickmansworth having only 6 players. Big thanks to St Albans finest Paul Banks, Qasim Khan, Vijay Luthra and Jonathan Harris for coming in as late replacements to ensure the fixture went ahead. The drama didn’t end there with Marcus Hardy incorrectly being told the game was cancelled on arrival, only the have to return shortly after once the confusion was resolved.
Skipper Melling won the toss and elected to bat in a contest between two youthful sides. Andy Knill-Jones and Tom Townend opened the St Albans innings. Knill-Jones departed unluckily second ball of the match to a stunning diving catch at short cover. Townend was joined by Rhys Barham and the set about rebuilding. Barham dispatching the Rickmansworth bowlers to all parts of Sandpit Lane with ease. They took the score past 50 before Townend was caught behind bringing Oliver Brown to the crease. Brown was also well caught at short cover after hitting a cut shot right off the middle of the bat.
Skipper Melling came and went very quickly after a brainless short saw his stumps rearranged. Vikas Narula was next in and settled in with Barham at the crease. Barham went past 50 and continued to time the ball brilliantly taking St Albans past 150 with some impressive stroke play. Rickmansworth brought on his St Albans teammate Jonathan Harris to bowl and riveting contest ensued between the two friends. With much chatter between the pair after Harris had earlier dropped Barham Rhys was nearing and impressive century only to be caught off Harris for a brilliant 90. Max Martyn on debut and plaing his first game of cricket in “a while” looked to accelerate the St Albans innings with some impressive hitting before being stumped. Fin McNab and Wil Barham took St Albans to a very respectable 181 of their 35 overs.
In reply Vikas and Barham Jnr impressively opening the bowling for St Albans. Vikas drawing the edge only for his skipper to shell the chance at first slip. This drop proved costly as the batsman made St Albans pay with some fine stroke play. Probing spells from Townend and Hardy went without reward with Melling dropping another very difficult chance at short cover. Some suicidal running saw the breakthrough for St Albans thanks to some sharp work from Brown and Knill-Jones. A likely difficult evening in one Rickmansworth household as father ran out son in rather comical fashion. The breakthrough brought St Albans finest Jonathan Harries to the crease. With his usual style he withstood much chat from his friends in the field and began to find the gaps. The pair put on a key partnership to bring Rickmansworth5s/St Albans7s to within touching distance of victory. Good spells from Martyn, Wagner and Brown all went without reward until breakthrough did eventually come for St Albans thanks to a good running catch from Rhys Barham of Martyn. Another one of St Albans finest Qasim Khan was next in and he showed he has inherited his uncle Najib’s eye for runs. Khan and Harris saw Rickmansworth through to victory after Harris completed a well deserved 50.
A very enjoyable afternoon of cricket with a number of debuts and adult debuts for the St Albans side. Big thanks to Paul, Qasim, Jonathan and Vijay for steeping in last minute to ensure a game, some very bright futures ahead
