Reed 1st XI v St Albans Cricket Club 1XI on Sat 20 May 2023 at 12:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets
Match report
Finally, the sun had decided to come out and after 2 weeks of waiting the 1s were able to get their championship campaign underway with a trip to Reed. The trip was a long one, just under an hour, to the picturesque Cockenach CC. Sadly for some members of the team they managed to find themselves half an hour North at a different ground, the 10:20 meet an impossible task. Apple Maps taking the half the blame, Connor Mitchell the rest.
Skipper Regan won the toss and elected to field on what looked a decent pitch, but one we imagined would only flatten out as the day went on. Whilst the pitch was doing a bit early on Reed decided to start the BBQ for the day after just 4 deliveries, the opener run out without facing a ball. When Jamie struck through the gate the next over Reed were 2-2 and staring down the barrel. Saints applied the pressure up until drinks and Reed were barely at 2.5 an over courtesy of some tight bowling up top from Hammer, Regan and Baylis, the latter failing to appeal off his own bowling when the number 3 had smashed one into Mude’s gloves. Shortly after drinks Baylis got his man, caught by the introduced O’Toole at slip, and Regan followed suit shortly after with an identical dismissal. O’Toole questioning if 3 catches really was worthy of a jug.
In truth Reed never really recovered from here. Mitchell and Adshead claimed the next 5 wickets between them for very few runs. Some extremely interesting shots were coming out on the balls Reed decided not to block, one man standing pretty much on his stumps all innings and then charging every delivery he faced. The innings wouldn’t have been complete without a burglary from Capaldi to finish. A long hop spooned into the air to find O’Toole once again. The catch taken and a jug secured, Reed 121 all out to set up a seemingly comfortable chase.
Regan squared set about the chase with aggression, punishing short balls from the Reed openers. Reed became disgruntled very early on with some members of their team being spoken to by the umpires for their actions on the field. However, this somewhat fired them up. One of their opening bowlers found his line and length and claimed first the wicket of Joe Regan, and then bowled Jamie, Josh and Connor in fairly similar fashion. What had seemed a comfortable scoreline at 50-0 had turned into 90-5 due to these wickets and a calamitous run out involving O’Toole and Bancroft which became the most debated topic of the day. When Capaldi gubbed a long hop to 45 and Bancroft caught at slip, Saints found themselves in a tricky position. 20 runs needed with Hounslow and Mude at the crease, failing that the ever reliable talents of Baylis and Adshead with pads on in the hut. There were some real heart in the mouth moments. Hounslow completely clothing a half tracker which almost fell into the grasp of the bowler, a couple directed just past the slips. Through it all the pair showed why Saints have such a luxury of a long batting order and they got us out of jail. They saw it home with some good running and a few glorious strokes to the boundary from Mude.
25 points in the bag, and a clean sweep which made the long trip back to Clarence Park seem all the sweeter.
