St Albans Cricket Club 6XI v Botany Bay 3XI on Sat 02 Sep 2023 at 1pm
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 2 runs

Match report Only the 3rd match of the season for the 6XI, but the tightest finish yet.
This was a repeat friendly fixture with Botany Bay. Taking the previous fixture into consideration it was agreed at a very early toss that St Albans would bat first.
A few days before the game the opposition had requested to delay the start by 30 mins, so it was with some surprise to see Botany Bay taking to the field ready for the original start time – and so the gamesmanship began!
Sulaiman (22) and Fin (39) were unflustered and set a great platform of 59 for the opening partnership after 13 overs. Annie hit a glorious cover drive for 4, but was out to a quicker yorker soon after. Ethan Witty (35*) joined Fin and they started to rebuild. With wickets in hand St Albans pressed the accelerator, in doing so both Fin and Praveen (quick fire 11) were stumped. Ieuan (8) caught in the deep. Jonathan (23) channelled his inner Joe Root and executed several switch hit ramps for 4s, the youngsters hitting 80 off the last 10 overs to set a competitive 170 from 35 overs.
Continuous field changes had meant the game was well behind the clock, so a quick break and St Albans took to field confident in their ability to defend 170, with 9 bowlers at the captain’s disposal.
Botany Bay’s gamesmanship went up another level during their reply.

Jonathan (5-25-1), Tom (4-11-1), and Sulaiman (4-12-0) kept things tight at the top of the innings, a great diving caught and bowled by Tom taking the first wicket in the 2nd over. At drinks Bay were level with the St Albans innings at the same stage, around 70-1. St Albans kept attacking looking for more wickets and a diving catch by Sulaiman, far too good at this level, set the tone for the innings. Molly and Hannah, playing their first ever Saturday games, combined to give Molly her first wicket, comfortably caught behind by Hannah.
With 11 needed off the last 2 overs, the skipper turned to the youngsters Jonathan (U14) and Ethan (U13) to close out the game. Jonathan coming back in to clean bowl the dangerous no 3 bat for 53. Ethan taking responsibility for the final over with 6 needed. With a close set field Ethan gave no scoring opportunities. Bay could only scramble a couple of leg byes and St Albans won by 2 runs.
A tight finish for a 6s team made up of players from U13s, U14s, Women’s XI, and a couple of (slightly) older players. Everyone in the team contributed to a well deserved victory, not only playing the better cricket, but also not letting Bay’s umpiring tactics get into their heads.

Player of match – Ethan Witty (35* + bowling the final over)
