St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 20 runs

Match report It was great to see both the sun and the team’s anticipation shining on Sunday morning ahead of the first game of the season! Although the overhead conditions were conducive to a game of cricket, the going under foot was soft (heavy in places), so Captain Maya had no second doubts in electing to bowl first when winning the rock-paper-scissors.

Excellent enthusiasm in the field was evident throughout with the girls encouraging each other to attack the ball in the field and ‘scoop not squash’ any ball that came in their vicinity. It was pleasing to see each player bowl some good balls of line and length which allowed the Harpenden batters to play their shots backed up by some excellent St Albans fielding. Alice was unlucky not to take an early catch of the season contender! After 100 balls, Harpenden had reached 304 (starting at 200).

In reply, Amelie and Olivia opened the innings with a partnership of 21 with no wickets lost; followed by Eleanor and Amber with 23 runs and one wicket. Both pairs doing their best to hide their frustrations at the lack of balls to hit and the low bounce. The trend continued as Maya and Emily added 13 in their 25 balls. Unfortunately, a spade would have been more useful that a bat at times! Needing 52 off the final 25 balls, Alice and Isidora managed to hit some boundaries scoring 42 runs but for the loss of 2 wickets.

Whilst the St Albans team finished 20 runs short of the opposition score, they can take many positives from the game with smiles and learning a plenty in all aspects of the game. Consistency with our bowling and running quick singles are both targets for the future. Well done to everyone, especially Alice who was voted St Albans player of the match by our hosts!
