Bushey CC 2nd XI v St Albans Cricket Club 3XI on Sat 05 Jul 2025 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets
Match report
With the 3XI looking to bounce back from their setback last week, they had the pleasure of travelling to Bushey for their final game of the first round of fixtures in the 2025 season. Thanks to no less than 4 regulars deciding to dress up as yellow cartoon characters and travel to Birmingham to sample the night life entertainment on offer, along with a bit of Bazball, it was a much changed XI that greeted West on his late arrival to the ground following his matchday Ubering delays. For those unaware, Bushey have been the subject of league sanctions due to the state of their square in recent years, and happened to receive an award for their work in reviving it at this year’s league presentation evening. Given the look of the surface on Saturday, this is surprising.
It looked another key toss to win, and of course, Bushey won it. Saints batting first again.
Within 20 minutes of his arrival, the skipper was back in the hutch and making an instant coffee and a few Yorkshire teas for his team, as he thought he may as well do something useful on a Saturday for once. In the middle, PD and Stu were battling hard but the new ball was taking a liking to the wicket. They soon succumbed, with Stu in particular getting an unlucky one as he was adjudged bat before wicket from their self-proclaimed accredited umpire. Probably didn’t help that the Bushey boys appealed for everything that had hit the pads up to that point. Village.
Wickets continued to tumble, with Moksy and Sarang looking good but all too briefly, as they came and went before the 10 over mark. 21-5, and the Saints staring down the barrel of an embarrassing loss.
This brought 3XI debutant Monis Haris to the crease with Ethan to partner him. Together they stopped the rot for a brief period, but it was soon Monis alone who the Saints innings would be dependent on. Witty, O’Toole and Banks came and went in brief supporting roles to Monis who had batted excellently on a tricky surface that was now calming down with the older ball, and he maintained mature temperament throughout as he guided the Saints up to a respectable score. Plaudits must go to Telkman and Dan Rosson, who stuck around with him to see him to a maiden 3XI half-century, and beyond as 59 runs were added for the last 2 wickets. Monis finishing on 77*.
With a defendable score to field, Banks and Telkman started excellently with the ball and JT had a breakthrough in the 3rd over with Ethan taking the catch at backward point. In his following set, he had one LBW. Bushey 8-2 and the Saints tails firmly up.
Banks and JT kept it tight for the remainder of their opening spells, but couldn’t break through the defences of the Bushey pair. Dross and West soon partnered up with the ball, and it has to be said that the latter’s spell wiped out a lot of the pressure built up to that stage. The only further breakthrough was by Murray as his first ball was cooly pouched by Rosson at cover, but the runs required were approaching ever faster. Apart from a pair of dropped catches off the returning Banks, one by the skipper himself to cap off his anti-captain’s display, there was nothing further the 3XI could do to prevent the result.
A tough loss to take, with the 3XI now up against it in their quest for 6B. A near faultless second half of the season is required, with a bit luck with the weather to go with it too, and we look ahead to the game against Hatch End next week to put our opening day loss right.
