St Albans Cricket Club 2XI v Chorleywood CC 2nd XI on Sat 07 Jun 2025 at 12:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets

Match report After what can only be described as some terribly calculated rain cards the Friday prior the 2s and Andy Wright arrived at CP, the latter arriving so early for his net that he beat the majority of those actually playing at CP. Fair play, he helped us set up for literally no reason at all.

After Adshead attempted to set up a warmup reminiscent of the Saturday 1s drills, we provided ground fielding reminiscent more of the Sunday 1s the following day at Brondesbury which didn’t set the tone particularly well. Rory losing the toss and it looked like a long day was in store but to the amazement of everyone Chorleywood decided to bat first with rain inbound. This surely meant that St Albans would have the upper hand, but only time would tell.

The early stages were not meant to be and rather was a continuation of the standards set in the warmup, with dropped catches and a hardly believable LBW appeal off Adshead turned away by the visiting umpire. Harvey struggled to find his length and Adshead being shot by the CP pistol, the heavy artillery of the sniper still cast away since it got Jimmy Rosson back in 2019. Adshead continued off his shorter run and remarkably bowled better, claiming the first wicket with a horrible swing across the line.

From the other end Swhitey came into the attack and this is where the game really began to swing. First of all, the holy moment of the day with Simon bowling an uncharacteristic pad line, expertly snared down the leg side off the batsman’s trousers by Caswell who then whipped the bails off in a flash to leave the Chorleywood batsman well short of his ground. Saints now buoyed by this continued to chip away at the Chorleywood batsmen with both Adshead and White picking up a further 2 wickets, massively thanks to the magnet Dan Harvey who simply could not get enough of the ball all afternoon. White in particular bowled a quite remarkable spell, 10 overs 3-6 including 6 maidens which all followed each other consecutively. His final wicket an absolute peach before drinks, Chorleywood staring down the barrel.

Winfield and Rosson took over duties and immediately found their line and lengths. Winfield removing the Chorleywood number 6 who after blocking 7 off 45 balls decided to have a go at a full and straight one, headloss. The tail was then wrapped up courtesy of a knuckleball by Winfield, an interesting display from the number 9, which resulted in the easiest of catches to Perrin and a disastrous run out only made worse by the fact it was a direct hit by Winfield. Chorleywood had completely collapsed from 46-0 to 103 all out.

We set out to chase with the knowledge of heavy rain to come. With this captain Law promoted Winfield to the top of the order still hoping for him to recapture his form from Sunday’s prior. Sadly this was not meant to be as first he lost senior opener Perrin to a caught and bowled, Perrin sensing enough urgency in the forecast to run off the pitch. Winfield then fell to a ball which “just had to go.” For context he played a slog sweep off middle stump from the first ball he faced off the opener.

Law and Caswell steadied the ship, putting short balls to the fence and Rory sending one crashing into the sightscreens. This prompted Chorleywood to place a fielder in front of the sightscreen, who was then reminded you can’t move from there until the ball has been hit, so he moved to the corner of the screens instead.

Sensing rain, Caswell who had been ticking along nicely despite plinking was bowled trying to fire Saints towards their target. Ahaan then joined Rory who continued his assault on the depleted Chorleywood attack, bringing up his 50. Ahaan then finished the game off with a cut through the off side with the rain hammering down little more than 5 minutes later.

Another 30 points on the board, 4 wins from 5 and up to second in the table!
