Markyate CC 1st XI v St Albans Cricket Club 3XI on Sat 26 Jul 2025 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 117 runs

Match report The 3XI travelled to the picturesque and quaint village of Harlington, a place familiar with a few members of the team as it is situated a Friday night beer nap’s length away from London St Pancras station on the Thameslink line. Oddly enough, the fixture was against Markyate CC, not Harlington CC, as owing to the Markyate’s wider sports club’s “love of beer and football”, the cricketing element of the club have decided to relocate. It’s hard to fathom why we thought they weren’t decent blokes.

West was attuned to the sly tactics of his opposite number, as the Markyate skipper attempted to commence the toss as the roller was waiting on standby beyond the boundary. Roller waved on by West, 1-0. The roller not ending up doing the slightest bit of difference to the shit tip and the toss being lost anyway (yet again). 1-1.

With Markyate batting first, they approached the setting of a target with disdain for both the travelling bowling party, and West’s mental wellbeing. Ethan was soon pulled from the firing line, and replaced with Stu who found a breakthrough straight away with JC gathering the ball in his midriff at cover.
At the other end, Chaz was toiling away drawing many swings and misses as the Markyate batters tried to hit every ball into the stratosphere. At the very end of his spell, the batter who had been heaving his bat every which way in the nervous 40s succeeded in connecting with one. Fortunately for Chaz and St Albans, it was straight in the air to long off - straight towards the usually safe hands of skipper West. Unfortunately for Chaz and St Albans, West decided it was the opportune moment to bust out his Samba dance, culminating in him failing to get a hand to it and ending in a pile on the floor. This was the start of West’s big strop which lasted 30 overs, and was considerably worsened by his own bowling display which isn’t worthy of any further comment.

With the score at 125-1 at the halfway stage, it was time for D Ross and Tooley to apply the squeeze. This was an eventful passage of play, as boundaries continued to flow but with wickets now starting to fall. The lesser seen 3XI pairing of the Rossons combined a few balls into DRoss’ spell with some tidy glove work from brother Jimmy. Tooley then claimed scalps in each of his first 3 sets to give the Saints hopes of keeping the score somewhat chaseable.

However, more woes in the field for skipper West as he danced around another steepler, which in fairness did its own dance in the air owing to the sheer height it reached. If we were any closer to Luton airport, this would have been an incident to report to air traffic control. The lowest point of the fielding display came not too long after, as a dolly was then parried over the long off boundary by the skipper.

Chaz then had his own pair of tough chances dropped at the opposite long off boundary off consecutive balls, before the Markyate umpire waved away a 3 reds LBW shout off the very next ball, to incense Tooley and the St Albans men. To cap it off, JC who to that point has also had a run out waved away after some great work at cover, chested down a catch in the ring. This passage of play perhaps summed up the St Albans bowling innings.

278 the target. Markyate slight favourites at the break.

Good intent was shown up the order, but the popping pitch and climbing run rate was hard to contend with. Rudders fell early to a call that “did nothing” and Stu and West hit a few lusty blows before they both departed. DWG looked as silky as ever, accumulating runs until the curfew’s Chaz had to be sent in at 6 owing to his need to leave the game early. Chaz’s contribution consisted of hitting one to midwicket, calling DWG through and running him out, then getting out himself a few balls later. In fairness, Chaz didn’t deserve to leave the game without a scalp to his name.

The only partnership of resistance for the rest of the innings was Ethan and Jimmy, who batted sensibly in the pursuit of maximising bonus points. In the end, we ran out 117 run losers, with the all round display in the field leaving much to be desired.

If the day couldn’t get any worse, half of the St Albans team who had utilised the train to travel to the game were stranded in Harlington for an hour thanks to train cancellations. From all accounts, the beers were morale boosting during the wait with Rudders having no issue treating his fellow players to the cheap drinks on offer, being the big hitter that he is.

Onwards and upwards to next week.
