Radlett CC 3rd XI v St Albans Cricket Club 3XI on Sat 17 May 2025 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 23 runs
Match report
The first away day of the year for the 3XI was one the batsman in the side would have been relishing. Radlett’s 2nd ground is a safe bet for being the most well kept of squares in Div 7, and this assumption would soon be proven.
Prior to any cricket being played, the process of getting to Radlett had enough twists and turns befitting of its own match report. West’s car being blocked in behind the pavilion sparked a Clarence Park-wide manhunt for the offending driver. Detective mode activated, the first stop was the football ground as West paced into the arena swatting away ambling children with their ice creams in hand, as he fought his way to the tannoy. Announcement made, no immediate sign of luck. Shit. The next port of call was for the skipper and the assisting Howeson risking themselves being put on a list, as they did the rounds of the children’s play area looking for any hint of a clue as to the location of the mystery driver. West uncovered a lead - a profile of the two offenders.
An outsider looking in could have then easily profiled the prowling West as an outright creep, as he went to every pair of wondering ladies in the vicinity hoping to find the culprit. At last, inside Verdi’s, the guilty party was located and the 3XI cohort was soon on the move, but the warm up plan at the away ground was in tatters.
12:45 arrival, the rattled skipper managed to compose himself to call the coin correctly and spared no time requesting the Radlett team to don their whites and field.
Rudders (sporting an inappropriate thermal skin which he would soon regret) and West opened up, the latter lasting all of 5 balls on the Radlett road before JT adjudged him LBW… to a left armer bowling over the wicket - safe to say conversation between the pair was frosty at drinks. No complaints could be had at the state of the game though, as Rudders and Ash had set a good platform together since - Ash crashing a combination of fair and bad balls to the fence with regularity, whilst Rudders just about kept pace with the overs. No carnage today it seemed.
Rudders stand soon relented, with the score reading 102-2 - Ash having already passed 50 in chanceless fashion, in what was shaping up to be a special knock. Debutant Chandresh joined him at the crease, and after a period of interesting calling, they soon worked well in tandem. With the backdrop of a painfully slow over rate thanks to a few 12 ball overs, Ash eventually passed 100 with Chandresh joining him in passing a landmark of his own a few balls later. Both had ample time to pile on the pain with a late flurry of boundaries, leading us to a strong total of 245-2. Magnificent knocks from the pair to put the game firmly in our hands at the halfway stage.
Unfortunately, the Radlett chase couldn’t have started in a more unideal fashion for the 3XI. 86-0 after 10 overs. The pitch was not conducive to bowling that resembled anything remotely short, and this had been found out numerous times.
West thought best to introduce himself, and after his first over went for 16 he’d wished he’d never found the driver of the black VW Polo in Verdi’s. Altaf however was straight into his work at the other end, dismissing one of their openers to inject some life into the St Albans team - his conversion from Sunday gun to weekend gun proving key in this fixture. The plan from here on in was clear - bowl at the bloke that wasn’t slapping everything to the boundary. Cricket proved to be quite a simple game from this point onwards.
West struck first, firing a Yorker underneath the no.4’s defences. The very next ball, a good looking shout for LBW was waived away but Altaf soon made amends for that in the next over, getting the nod for the appeal on that occasion.
Hicks was then introduced to tempt the set batsman, but although there was no quick bite to his loopy offies, he did stifle him for a few overs which was a welcome reprieve.
Following drinks and the end of Altaf’s spell, the skipper tried his luck at the other end with the ball. He struck after 3 deliveries, with Altaf unable to keep out of the action with a catch at mid on. With the rate continuing to climb, St Albans were beginning to set a foothold in the game as Clayton was having to shoulder the bulk of the scoring with limited opportunities and following another wicket from West - Hingston taking a smart grab with the gloves - Hicksy finally had the prized wicket of the opener in the following over as he chipped one up to short cover. The St Albans tails were now firmly up.
Witty and Telkman were reintroduced, and thanks to their tidy second spells the rate continued to climb sufficiently to force the Radlett batters into a run that wasn’t there, with Deb and Sam Mistry combining excellently on the boundary to force a run out.
Just 2 wickets were now required, and there was one apiece for both Telks and Witty. The latter snicking one through to Ben to cue the celebrations. A fantastic team effort to drag back the game after a disastrous first 10 overs to the 2nd innings defence, and put 30 well deserved points on the board.
