Match report It was a contrasting morning of fortunes for the 2s. The skipper, winless in 11, was in
the nets with Macca at 10am. The opening bowler, 11 beers in, had only just gone to
bed, some baffling voice notes and late-night phone calls sent. Adshead had broken
the website, causing emails not to be sent correctly.

We turned up haphazardly, Deb and Jithin had decided to ignore the meet time and
arrive to their own special one half an hour later than the rest of the team, hugely fun
for Law who had to deputise as keeper in the warmup (despite his fielding needing
more work than his company’s IPL model). The warmup was excellent, and Hemel
won the toss, deciding to bat first (despite the impending rain).

The innings started nicely, Banksy bumped their good opening bat, he skied it, Jithin
decided he didn’t really fancy it despite it landing right next to him. 1/0. Banks kept
probing, cranking his speed up. It was quite clear he wasn’t the opening bowler out
at 4am.

Winfield opened from the other end, opting to attempt swing bowling. It went pretty
well all things considered, an opening wicket aided by a tumbling catch from Law,
then trying his best (but failing) to drop a caught and bowled chance.

We went into a bit of a lull, run scoring not coming easily but no wickets, before
Winfield snagged another before drinks, tamely chipped to the buckets of James
Church at cover.

Drinks. Motivational words The introduction of Yusuf Mayet. Yusuf took
two important wickets, including the set number 4 who had decided to be not out on
99 the week prior. Both wickets caught by West, one watching him fall to the floor,
still somehow catching it, the second a very good grab, running forward and
pouching it on the slide. Yusuf’s spell had brought it back towards us.

Sadly, some death runs on a good pitch as we struggled to capitalise on the wickets
fallen. Banks came back and took a pole, West took a pole and Monis bowled tightly
despite being entrusted with death overs. 216 scored. Probably under par but it felt
like it could have been so much less.

A huge shoutout to Hammer, who bowled with immaculate control despite a
shoulder injury. The control gave us a lot of pressure throughout and was thoroughly
deserving of a wicket.

Tea was taken, Rudlin and Deb to open. Rudders had decided that 40 overs was the
optimal format to field, but he prefers 50 to bat. Good to see we’ve replaced
Howeson well after his thumb injury. Both started watchfully, Rudlin departed for a
sturdy 19, Deb followed for 26. Both had looked composed. West and Church to keep
building, the required rate was mounting. Church fell to the pressure, then West
soon after. West had made 37 valuable runs with some good striking against the wily
Hodgkins, but sadly decided 4 lives was enough and nicked off. A good knock to keep
an interesting discussion on whether he wants to stay at CP in the coming weeks.

Law and Jithin stuck there for not very long, some pretty bizarre chat from the oppo
who seemingly were aware of Rory’s holiday plans previously in Morocco, with a
smattering of jokes about the word Tory. Law needed to stay in to avoid the wrath of
Hammer! Law nailed one to a fielder, oppo celebrated.

Jithin played another trademark innings, some beautiful shots but fell after making
a platform. Winners fell soon after missing a straight one (a dismissal so
uncharacteristic for him…), and hammer strode in.

My memory is hazy, but I believe we needed around 85 from the last 10. Monis and
Hammer in. What followed was a clinic in hitting the cones, Hammer and Monis
rotating strike excellently, using their feet and hitting the bad ball. A highlight being
a gorgeous Monis cover drive for four. Both of them took us so agonisingly close,
Monis adjudicated stumped on 38, a superb knock.

In walked Banks, surprisingly quiet. He batted nicely, knocking singles to get
hammer on strike. Hammer hit two decisive fours, shuffling across and hitting to leg.
At this point, Hemel were defeated. Hammer and Monis’ rearguard had left them
bereft of ideas, and any spirit.

The Saints got home thanks to more runs from Hammer, celebrations galore from
the upper balcony of the pavilion. What a run chase it was.
