St Albans Cricket Club Women's 1XI v Broxbourne CC Womens 1st XI on Sun 31 May 2026 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 6 wickets

Match report This Sunday brought with it the next instalment of the St Albans CC Women’s 1XI’s T20 escapades. This week, the ship was helmed by none other than squad mainstay Annie O’Gorman, spearheading a team comprised of young guns and experienced veterans alike. As you can tell: a recipe for success.

O’Gorman skilfully won the toss and elected to bat first, deploying influencer sensation Molly Green and local legend Anum Ahmad. The pair took to the task, but disaster struck almost immediately: with the mentality of “it’s a T20, let’s bat and run with intent”, Green called a run in the first over but unfortunately had overestimated exactly how far the ball had gone. She found herself comfortably run out for a duck, making way for Olivia ‘Liv’ O’Neill to shoulder arms.

Anum continued batting with patience and tactful aggressive shots, picking the sparse bad balls when they came and showing due respect to the good ones. Liv made an immediate splash, striking her first ball for 4 with authority, but on her second she was unfortunate to find herself bowled. Captain Fantastic then strode out to the crease undoubtedly fretting over the pressure of being someone’s fantasy captain for the week and definitely not fretting over the depleted run rate. She would act as our anchor, playing a chanceless innings, despite two LBW/caught behind appeals from the opposition bowler who A) mistook the distinctive wooden ‘snick’ of the bat for an LBW, and B) admitting she, on a later delivery, only appealed for a catch because “if you don’t ask then you don’t get.” Fair enough, can't argue with it.

Anum and Annie set about carefully building a partnership, but while they both showcased excellent temperance and patience, they found the overs slipping away from them without as many runs to show for it as a T20 would often require. In the twilight overs of the innings, they would open up and begin taking more risks and running harder: Anum was the first to fall, bowled on a sensational 34, making way for Sally Cheeseman to approach.

Sally came with the brie-lliant aggressive intent warranted by a T20, but the oppo bowler’s better deliveries were grating away at her. She played two big shots to no reward, finding herself trapped LBW. I know what you’re thinking, dear reader: “Sally’s too good for that, no whey umpire!” But I tell you what: her intent shone through, showing the right mindset for the T20 format, showcasing Cheeseman’s matured thought process, which was a cracker, making it edam good tactical mindset.

I’ve indulged myself too much, moving on. Freya Witty was next up, striking a booming 2 on her first ball and running a sharp single to see out the innings alongside Annie. The set total was 64: not the total we perhaps would have liked, but given the calibre of bowling in our locker, there was certainly a game here.

Following a swift turnaround, Annie threw the new ball to openers Evie Davis and Freya. The pair set about trying to conserve the run rate, but one of the opening bats was clearly in a hurry. Evie and Freya bowled some sensational deliveries, particularly given the lack of a competitive score to defend: they were unfortunate to retire wicketless, ushering Liv and Anum to the bowler’s end.

Liv, like Evie and Freya, bowled extremely well, keeping things tight and forcing the batters to work for their runs. During this, Anum was busy running riot from the pavilion end. Echoing Liv’s composure in giving little runs away, she bowled a 2.1 over spell, claiming the scalps of no less than four batters through an LBW and three clean bowled deliveries. She was, frankly, unplayable, backing up her stellar batting performance with some unbelievable bowling quality. The hat trick opportunity presented itself at one stage: the ball glances off the bat onto the pad, Anum goes up bellowing - the umpire wants to give it, purely for the content, but he was clearly a man of ethics, solemnly shaking his head to deny Anum. What a loser.

The game came to a close in the 11th over, with the Broxbourne batter dispatching a 4 to seal the victory. Overall, a match that was played in good spirits, but with definite notes for next time concerning the style of batting in a T20. That said, our bowling and fielding performances were second to none: a massive shout out is due for Anum’s 4fer and for being our top scorer, singlehandedly preventing the game from totally getting away from us and very much keeping the dream alive for a good while. Roll on next week which sees us gear up for the rematch in the league: “Broxbourne: This Time it’s Personal.”

Player of the Match: Anum Ahmad, 34 runs and a 4fer.
