Chipperfield Clarendon CC 1st XI v St Albans Cricket Club 2XI on Sat 13 Jun 2026 at 12:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 4 wkts

Match report Who needs 104 games of goonball when you've nerve shredding entertainment like this?

The punchline: the 2s chased 224 winning in the 48th over, six wickets down, in the prior ten overs this could have gone any way amid wonderful/risky batting but also several misfields and dropped catches by an increasingly anxious Chipperfield.
From the ridiculous (last week’s monsoon at CP) to the sublime, Chipperfield bathed in sunshine felt like an impressionist masterpiece. Even more so after inhaling the clouds of a dope fiend's 'smoke' wafting across the ground throughout the first innings, the Church side boundary presenting a different sort of hazard to the usual stray dogs, molehills and nettle bushes.

Rory won the toss and decided to bowl. A tricky decision as the track was hard to judge being a used surface from a midweek game. As it turned out it offered good carry but also something for the bowlers, an even contest throughout.
The SACC pre-match warm up saw a ferocious intensity which was matched during the game by committed fielding despite being a bumpy, uneven outfield. This constrained Chipperfield to 224 all out in 46.2 overs, on a pitch worth 250 plus. The bowling was a team effort but noteworthy was Adrian 'CSK' Chennels 3-52 and particularly Banksy's 4-29 where he bowled fast and straight to blow away a nervous tail.

Moving to SACC's batting, the scorecard looked like a randomly generated number series worthy of a Euromillions jackpot, with almost everyone contributing to the chase. Chipperfield did however have some wily bowlers, their seamers generating lift, and spinners turn. The flurry of wickets between overs 33 (134-3) to 39 (168-6) brought elevated anxiety levels among the SACC 'supporters' (the smoke had clearly worn off). Clearly work to do.

However, Monis (46*) came to the crease and played a calculated innings mixing attack and defence respectively. Half volleys and half trackers were dispatched with some crunching shots and clever placement. Banksy supported, offering his own brand of defence, swishes and crisp drives. This pair, aided by hard and brave running, chased down the score in the 49th over for a memorable victory and delerious celebrations.

Champagne moment - a tie between Bansky removing their tailender with a thunderbolt which took ten minutes to find the bails. And Monis playing himself in by running down the track to first ball and smoking it into the sightscreen.
Lemonade moment - BFG realising half way through a risky run he was struggling, diving with some panache and no little style but failing to avoid being run out by a thunderbolt throw from the deep.

Next week we are at home against Cockfosters. A winnable game. Bring the noise!

MOTM - Tom Banks
DOTD - Tom Banks
Shot of the day - Monis first ball slapped over the bowler's head for four rather disdainfully
HMOTD - "you couldn't pick a strawberry in a strawberry field" after number 5 didn't know what a variation ball was
