Match report Following the promising signs of last weekends performance at Hemel Hempstead, skipper Baylis called in the old guard for the visit of Knebworth Park to CP, newly promoted to Division 2A. Regan x2, Bancroft, Cawood, Howeson and Rooney all returned to the side, whilst the bowling attack remained very similar to what we had seen last time out.

Last season in our second pre season game Baylis drank 15 alcoholic beverages on a storm out in St Albans. This week he turned his attentions to a lighter delicacy, 15 Becks Blues on a Friday night. Andy Saunders will be livid that his stock for the season is already gone.

No less than 5 Simmons members this week, Adshead, Baylis, Mulvaney, Banks and A. Cawood. Ben was there too but didn’t offer much. A car parking debacle at CP left many frustrated and an uncontested toss set the tone for what was to come.

Jamie Regan cashed in early, on 42 just 5 overs in, including 2 all run 4s in the first over. He got bored and wanted to give someone else a go so whacked one straight up, well held by the Knebworth skipper. We were then treated to a full array of shots over extra cover from Bancroft over the extremely angry off spinner, who later did a Badsy and pulled his hammy before just leaving the ground after 30 overs. Must have been keen to get home for the 3pm kick offs.

Bancroft eventually perished for 71, Cawood dotted his way to the same score before being bowled by Knebworth’s handy U15 left arm seamer. Cameos from Joe Regan and Mulvaney gave the crowd more to shout about, amidst a rather comical run out of Howeson. 255-7 the final score off 40 overs, on a great deck.

Less said about the first 8 overs the better. The ball flew off the bat to all parts and Rooney and Banks’ toiling looked to go fairly unrewarded until Banks drew an edge from the opener to leave Knebworth 50 odd for 1. Rooney then settled in and bowled nicely, and skipper Baylis from the other end claimed the next scalp in an exemplary 6 over spell.

Adshead came on. Went at 3s, got 2 wickets, put the crowd to sleep. Should have had a 3fer but he decided to try and catch the ball with his nose rather than his hands. Special mention to a genuine gun leg side stumping from Bancroft. Nick Hall delighted to put his finger up at square leg, before checking the aforementioned Bancroft’s bat size in disbelief that he scored runs.

Mulvaney took the Max Capaldi role and took a 3fer including the one Knebworth batter who had scored any runs, bowled round his legs. The end was nigh and Banks finished the game off with another dismissal for Bancroft, his 4th in the game. Knebworth all out for 160, but 2 men short due to the hamstring and keeper breaking his finger.

All in all a pretty routine day out for the 1s, with valuable time spent in the middle. Unfortunately it now looks like Baylis may actually have to pick Badsy to bring disgrace and boredom upon Division 1. Can Leverstock Green live with it? Find out on Saturday 9th May at CP.
