Match report After a disappointing early-season, cobweb-blowing, WD40-ing defeat last week, Saints
came into the game against local rivals, Radlett, determined to set things right. Mid-week
tactical discussions involved sharing videos of Brian Lara and using our feet and coming
down the wicket to the slower bowlers but, importantly, not going for the million-dollar
inside out over extra cover shot for six but rotating the strike. Such was the level of
conviction that the main proponent, Rudlin, secured a promotion to the 2s - whether it was
a result of this tactical insight we will leave to the reader to determine.

Anyway, onto the game, where regular skipper West had also been promoted and so
birthday boy, JT, was left to navigate the SLCG security system and coordinate erecting the
marquee. Saints duly won the toss on an impressively manicured pitch and elected to bowl
first. Magee and Husain opened the bowling and immediately exacted swing and Magee, in
particular, was unlucky to go wicketless in the opening overs. Radlett opener, Arnold, was
quick to pick up anything short until we was brilliantly caught off Husain by a diving Murray
at square leg - maybe he’s better off not being in the gully? Husain picked up his second
wicket with another good catch by Murray to leave Radlett 53-2.

After strategically allowing Magee and Husain to see off the top order, Telkman brought
himself into the attack first change, down the hill. The ball continued to swing in favourable
conditions (and was certainly the major contributing factor in the 11 wides bowled by
Telkman) and Saints took advantage with Telkman picking up 2 caught behind the wicket -
one by keeper, Hingston and the other snaffled by O’Toole at first slip: the 3s doubly
delighted at the sight of both a safe pair of hands in the office and that Telkman had actually
managed to get the ball to carry to first slip. At the Sandpit Lane end left-arm twirler, Shaw,
came into the attack and in his first over enticed a Radlett batter to advance down the
wicket attempting the big shot with Hingston promptly whipping off the bails after he found
only fresh air (should have followed Rudlin’s advice).

Shaw bowled with excellent variety and extracted turn and bounce from a high-quality cricket wicket and,
in combination withTelkman, saw off the rest of the Radlett batting line up in fairly quick time with two more
catches for Hingston and a well-executed run-out between Magee and Shaw. Radlett all out
for an under par 108 inside 29 overs; Telkman 5-37, Shaw 2-18 and Husain 2-32
complemented by an excellent all-round fielding performance by the team.

With rain on the horizon, Saints imposed a 10-minute turnaround and Murray and Street
opened up the innings determined to take responsibility for a tricky-little-chase. From ball
one, Murray and Street played with controlled aggression and were pleased to see a little
bit of extra pace on the ball from one of Radlett’s openers which enabled both players to
play some excellent shots: a check drive from Street through extra cover and one-legged,
Caley-esque pull from Murray the highlights alongside good running between the wickets.

Street was the first wicket to fall for a chase-breaking 29 off 31 balls but Saints no. 3, Wright
(27*), continued where Street left off with numerous well-timed cuts and drives that
propelled Saints towards the total at nearly a run a ball. Murray (30) eventually fell to a
good return catch by Patel with the score 86-2 but by then the game was done and it was
left to Wright and Dean to see Saints home, comfortably chasing the score in 20.1 overs -
an excellent effort by the top 3 considering the underwhelming batting last week.

With the first win of the season in the bag and spirits high, the 3s returned to CP to follow a nailbiting 2s
chase and sample the real ale choices in the bar (apparently you are meant to
remove the airlock cap, who knew…).
