St Albans Cricket Club 2XI v Cockfosters CC 1st XI on Sat 20 Jun 2026 at 12:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 33 runs
Match report
The 2nds went down to a 33 run defeat to a well motivated and marshalled Cockfosters side, having earlier conceded
29 wides and no balls.
At least one record was broken at this game : the largest land boundary (Canada vs the US) at 9000km was surely beaten by that
at Clarence Park cricket field on Saturday 20th June. For info ICC regs for a max cricket boundary is 95m.
The (almost) summer solstice was met with surely the longest time in the field for 50 overs, including a final 30 minutes under
punitive fielding restrictions (5 in the ring). Another record??
The extra effort in sapping heat likely impacted the subsequent batting performance where running myriad consecutive twos to
the Canadian border almost required player defibrillation.
Onto the cricket. Rory won the toss, and based on having an all seam attack, elected to bowl. Despite the track offering some
help, Saints yielded 253. Fielding was of generally high quality - especially Jitin's keeping. Sadly though the bowling was well below
par. Saints bled a perplexing 50 extras including 29 wides and no balls.
Post refueling at tea, Cockfosters bowled steadily and accurately, dominated by 30 overs of spin. The pitch was gripping - but
Saints accumulated steadily, Westy unfurling several crisp drives. Jimmy Rosson got the rough end of an LBW decision, advancing
down the pitch. Matt Howeson came to the crease and played a bedrock innings of 76 with the highest strike rate of the lead
batters. Several reverse sweeps quite befuddled the spin triplets. Not bad for a guy with a dicky ticker and broken thumb.
Wickets did however fall regularly as scoreboard pressure took its toll - at the death, Banksy and Winners (who for once had an
early night) enjoyed a flurry of calculated hitting. Entertaining stuff - at one stage Winners almost stood on point's toes for his
signature 'gub' shot to the Canadian boundary. But it was all in vain.
Champagne moment: Westy producing a crunching on drive to the pavilion early in his innings, pure class.
Lemonade moment: Well, there were a few. Rory holing out to deep square for a two ball duck after being cheered to the crease
by his female fans and the Cockfoster lads?
Or JC (having shown his batting prowess by stroking an elegant 50 two weeks ago in the Chess Valley), being utterly bamboozled
by a left arm wrist spinner with a 'swish' where bat and ball appeared to be in different time zones. Welcome to the Primary
Club.
This defeat was all about wides, wides and more wides, which has now become a worrying trend needing some work to reverse.
