Match report A depleted 2s side took on Bushey, vying for promotion sitting 3rd in the table, knowing a loss could well take us into the drop zone. Like us, Bushey are a team of wild sloggers (joke probably laboured enough now), but are pretty effective, and had beaten us with a strong side in the first game of the season. CP looked resplendent, but was absolutely roasting, so probably a good thing the skipper lost the toss and was told to field. General shambles of a start as our umpire arrived 10 minutes before the start time, and we had no bails (judging by Alexis' chat throughout the day, they probably ended up in Wales).

Bushey's openers strode out, both their strongest players. New recruit Tom Law (the by far more talented Law brother) ran up and bowled a nice full straight one that the Bushey opener did us the generous favour of missing. 0/1. 2s cockahoop. Magee didn't quite have the same riproaring start, dispatched for six on the third ball of his twos debut. Don't bowl there. However, Bushey had this odd strategy of blocking it, then seeming to decide at totally random when to hit out, and wickets kept tumbling.

Next, Tom snagged their number 3, lucky twice then chipping the easiest of catches to Alexis at mid off, then Banksy took out their aggressive opener with an "inswinging yorker" (full toss that bowled him off his pads). A spell of actually sensible batting (I never thought I'd see the day), pulled Bushey back into the game, but debutant John Shaw got into his work, mixing up flighted slower balls with some turn/drift, an impressive debut, sending both back to the shed. One caught and bowled with a nonchalant one handed effort that would have made Jofra Archer blush, the other caught by Tooley (assist by Roberts behind the sticks).

Short sharp spells from Law and Banks kept swinging moments our way, the "Law firm" combining for a wicket, caught by the older brother at catching cover, and good grabs from Banks and Shaw at mid on/off kept wickets tumbling, as Ash Dean finished the job. Barely a chance down, barely any fielding errors, a great energy and vibe all around. Pretty impressive showing from this 2s side. The standout performance was of course Tom Law, who ripped through Bushey with 5/26. I'm going to have to play a lot of games of chess to get him available again but well bowled (grudgingly).

The deck was good, but we knew that Bushey could bowl. Fortunately, they didn't. Rudders and DWG put on an absolute clinic at the top of the order. DWG playing his shots, hitting over mid on and mid off regularly (captain seemingly unaware that he was allowed to change his field), Rudders digging in and taking on the shorter balls. Headlosses began, fielder shouting at fielder, chances started to go down. DWG brought up a calm 50, looking every bit as classy as the scorecard suggested, shortly falling to a sharp chance from the bowler. Rudders brought his up too and went next ball. Dean and Law senior finished the job as the buffet opened.

Some result from the 2s, who now go up to the top half of the table. Hemel next week, who are no pushover. A Spanish day from a Spanish team.
