Match report Despite the England result, the mood in the 3s camp was one of optimism as we made the trip to Radlett, fresh off a win the previous week. Spirits were lifted even further after some pre-match five-a-side and the news that we'd won the toss and would be batting first on what looked an absolute road.

Debs and Stu bounded out to the middle, while Yusuf jetted off to the nearest supermarket to pick up his meal deal — which he'd polished off by over 10. Debs was dismissed early, top-edging to mid-off for 8 after a couple of classy shots to get things going. Out strode the skipper next, his confidence high after scoring a century on this very pitch last time out.

From his very first ball, Ash looked supremely composed, defending the good deliveries and dispatching anything loose to the boundary – almost makes cricket sound easy, doesn't it… He was well supported by Stu at the other end, who looked set for a big score before being adjudged LBW by Telks for 27. Opinion was split on the decision, but we can at least take pride in the fact that one team's umpires were willing to raise a finger — more on that later...
Unfortunately for Radlett, next to the crease was Andy Wright, the 3s' leading run scorer this season. Fresh from middling a few during catching practice in the warm-up, he started brightly and quickly found his rhythm, while Ash continued to motor at the other end. It prompted a constant reshuffle of the field from the Radlett skipper, though somehow it never occurred to him to stick a man at backward point, despite Ash guiding it there more often than prime Joe Root.

With the scoreboard ticking over and 250 looking well within reach, both Andy and Ash brought up excellent half-centuries, with the latter accelerating to better than a run a ball. He eventually fell for a superb 89, but the rest of the side, in trying to pick up where he'd left off, couldn't quite keep the momentum going. In hindsight, batting properly rather than trying to launch everything for six in the final five overs might have squeezed out a few more runs, but after a handful of boundaries and a flurry of late wickets, we posted 222.

Radlett's chase started well, with the pitch still playing beautifully. Both openers looked proper players and, as the score passed 50, panic stations started to set in — even more so when Daiwik appeared to be pressured by the umpire to find a boundary ball by climbing a fence onto a train track. Thankfully, the ball was eventually retrieved and Charlie Knight made the breakthrough soon after.

Just a couple of deliveries later, Charlie had another as their number three gloved one through to Tooley, who took a superb one-handed catch at first slip. Despite our celebrations, the umpire remained unmoved, as did the batter — both adamant it wasn't out. Fortunately, after being questioned by the ump, the batter, seemingly unaware of the laws of cricket, admitted it had touched his glove, forcing the umpire to reluctantly reverse his decision.

Having wrestled back the momentum, Ethan Witty came on and bowled a tidy five-over spell, picking up another wicket in the process. Whether that makes up for his generationally bad chat in the field, however, remains up for debate...
The game was far from over, though, and a partnership of 80-odd swung things back into the balance with around 15 overs remaining. At this point, Tooley was seething. Not just because of the string of full tosses we'd served up, but because Ethan's sledging seemed to get worse with every over. At one stage he turned to Olly and Andy and muttered, "I might just have to bl**dy bowl at this rate." And so he did...

What followed was a performance for the ages. It reminded the long-serving players that class is permanent, while the newer members of the club got their first glimpse this season of one of the club's finest bowlers at his very best. From ball one, everything was on the money and Radlett barely had a sniff. Frustration soon crept in and Tooley's first wicket followed — middle stump uprooted. Soon came another, this time the big one, with Radlett's opener departing for a brilliantly made 70-odd after edging behind to Olly.

But the great man wasn't finished. Another wicket followed a few balls after, before he claimed his fourth a few overs later, courtesy of a bizarre attempted ramp shot.

At the risk of this match report turning into War and Peace, the skipper brought himself back on to wrap up the tail before some calamitous running from Radlett's final pair resulted in a simple run out and a vital 19-run victory that keeps our hopes of avoiding relegation very much alive.

Man of the match was a toss-up between Ash and Tooley, while Yusuf also deserves plaudits for his meal deal crisp selection – Skips unanimously endorsed by the team as an elite choice.
