St Albans Cricket Club 3XI v Markyate CC 1st XI on Sat 01 Aug 2026 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 3 wickets

Match report A confident St Albans 3s took to the field following an unsuccessful flip of the coin and were quick to make the breakthrough. The in-form PD bowled a double-wicket maiden in the third over of the match, assisted by smart catches from Ash Dean and Andy Wright. PD shared new ball responsibilities with Ryan Magee, who formed a solid partnership, restricting the opposition brilliantly and were unlucky to not take more early wickets, whether that be catches not quite going to hand or umpires with hands which had been sewn into their pockets. The third wicket came from a sharp piece of fielding from Magee at mid-on, direct hit, the umps begrudgingly raised his finger.

Adam Murphy and Yusuf Mayet continued to restrict Markyate through the middle overs (the former finishing with 8-0-18-1, an impressive economy of 2.25, only bettered by PD’s 8-3-16-2) and at the second drinks break, the opposition were 95-4 from 28 overs. We were now joined in the middle by Markyate’s Nasir Shah, a man who has gone viral on TikTok in the last few weeks for terrorising bowlers across Hertfordshire and when he’s bored of hitting sixes two handed, opts for a one-handed approach with equally devastating results. Shah went on to make 70 from 36 deliveries (6 x fours, 5 x sixes, none of which were one-handed disappointingly), outrageously clean hitting, a brutal watch. A couple of difficult chances in the deep didn’t quite go to hand, but Shah’s excellent striking took Markyate to 189-7 from their 40 overs. Removing Shah’s innings, 119-6 from 34 overs (6 total extras) is a truer reflection of the excellent bowling performance, and the unauthorised live stream suggests that some decisions didn’t go our way so potentially this could have been even better…

The target of 190 felt achievable but didn’t get off to the best start when Sarang Nair was unfortunate to fall to a sharp catch at square leg from the gun sub fielder, filling in for a particularly overweight gentleman who “had to make a call” and would only end up fielding for half of the opposition’s bowling innings. Sam Street and Ash Dean formed a solid partnership of 56 for the second wicket, despite some accurate new ball bowling from Markyate and at the halfway stage the Saints were 64-2, requiring just over a run a ball with wickets in hand and a deep batting line-up.

Ash anchored the innings brilliantly, eventually falling for a well made 81. That makes 228 runs in the last three innings for the in-form man. Ash was ably supported by Andy Wright, Sandipan Chanda and Richard O’Toole, who helped to increase the run rate but unusually for Div 7 West, even the 3rd and 4th change bowlers bowled with great accuracy and skill, which made it extremely difficult to ever get on top of the required rate, especially with the lack of fielding restrictions in the league. Ben Hicks and PD were set the task of scoring 16 from the last six deliveries but unfortunately the 3s fell eight runs short.

Following Bushey’s unusual mid-game concession (annoyingly against fellow relegation rivals Northwood), Markyate move top of Div 7 West with a healthy 28-point lead whilst the Saints slip back into the bottom two. Having only lost by a narrow margin, it would be easy to focus on the umpiring decisions which didn’t go our way (my personal highlight, which I’m yet to mention: a plumb LBW striking the batsman on the full in front of middle turned away because the umpire “couldn’t see the ball”) however the 3s served up another excellent performance against the best team in the league and if we continue to play like this until the end of the season, I have no doubt we’ll secure our Div 7 West status for next season.
