Rickmansworth CC 1st XI v St Albans Cricket Club 2XI on Sat 30 May 2026 at 12:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets
Match report
In truth this was a game of two halves. For 40 overs the track - which began dampish despite the enduring boiling spell of weather, popped or rolled at random intervals. In the second dig it had dried and flattened out with a more regular bounce.
Ricky duly won the toss and decided to bowl - lucky them. Batting was precarious - hard to drive unless the ball was a full half volley, and cutting and pulling needed to watch for the grubber. In the end 172 was about par - the best knocks a busy and inventive 52 by Jithin supported by Banksy who played watchfully for a well worked 24.
Some other dismissals were forgettable - but it was tricky to bat, the Ricky trundlers (and leggie who was turning it square) bowling accurately enough to induce some peculiar shots which the fielders were glad to pouch.
The 2nd dig was effectively played on a different surface. Whilst still painfully slow in pace and taking turn, the poppers and grubbers were now rare events.
This required a workmanlike bowling performance and JC (back from the footballing wilderness), Hammer, and Westy all bowled tidy spells. Westy at times seemed to be moving it round corners and was unlucky to take only one wicket.
Rory's menacing presence at short cover, a cross between the BFG and an X man, seemed at times to block out anything between point and mid off, including the light. It’s possible he saved about 20 runs from the bat, but this fine effort was negated by the profligate extras column (21 wides).
Champagne moment was Stu 'Hands' Murray who made a difficult catch on the deep mid-wicket boundary look easy. It wasn't. (A rare pie from JC smashed to cow on a long boundary.)
Sadly though, there were a lot of loose balls to be hit and some fine batting by ex: Saint Billy May, who compiled a well worked and unbeaten 59, effectively winning the game for Ricky.
Macca did however enjoy giving their Aussie out twice in the same ball as he punched one to slip and didn't walk.
Other noteworthy features of the game were the various searches for lost balls, Westy, Tooley, Banksy and a couple of others could have made several batches of nettle soup with the foliage taken out. In the field Saints also had to suffer the horrendous and mind numbing noise of the PA system pumping out 'tunes' which not even the massed Club 48 60 crew in attendance had the energy to dance to.
All in all a difficult day for Saints (seven wicket defeat), who, although enduring the worst of the playing conditions, needed to attack the stumps more which then brings bowled and LBW into play (there was one LBW all game).
Next week the 2nds return to CP to take on Totteridge
