Totteridge Millhillians CC 2nd XI v St Albans Cricket Club 2XI on Sat 08 Aug 2026 at 12:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets

Match report Much improved availability saw the 2nds field a strong team to take on Totteridge Milhillians away. The earlier home fixture had been a wash-out - the last day Hertfordshire saw any meaningful rain. This one was played in blistering heat and sunshine.

MT's ground is an odd one. Historically very lopsdided, much work has been done to even up an outfield which once had the gravitational pull of Cygnus X-1, the first ever black hole widely accepted by scientists. However, the square retains a marked gradient.

Also, in contrast to a parched, almost barren outfield, the square and pitch were a verdant green. Throughout the game, the combination of grass and gradient favoured the bowlers. Seamers got it to grip, spinners extracted turn.

Having said this 200 was probably par, but good bowling and reckless batting saw TM limp to 147 from 41.2 overs. Very few of us will ever see (live) what Ben Adshead produced - a superb hat-trick - bowled, caught behind and then an LBW ripping the guts from a bamboozled middle order. Figures of 10 overs, 4-24 tell a fuller story. Perhaps it should have been five fer as the Totteridge skipper had to be given out twice, showing a hybrid of disbelief and dissappointment. If he thought his wasn't plumb, there's real time footage (courtesy of Badsy's mum) for him to pore over.

Chennels Super King and Winners had similar figures on runs, and two wickets each. Their accuracy was backed up by generally good fielding, including several dives at short cover from the BFG. Next week's wicket at this ground will not need rolled.

The second dig was 'interesting'. Pez (53) silenced the chirping with some majestic batting, crunching drives, cuts and pulls. Then out of nowhere, nicked off.

The middle order struggled with accurate bowling, TM's wily seamer 'Shark' Navaee producing some magic balls which somehow defied the laws of physics and seamed up the hill. Churchy, Rory and Jitin perished in quick succession. It was left to Tom McCormick (27 - anything short went miles) and, following his first 50 for the club in a midweek game, a canny 35* from Tom Banks to see Saints home. Surely his most successful season with the bat, and a platform for more runs to come.

All in all it should have been a wider winning margin than 3 wickets, but these were two evenly matched sides on a helpful bowling surface. Whilst still four league games to play, this result made an eventual mid table outcome for Rory's men far more likely than any nastier prospect.

Champagne moment: Badsy's hattrick, hard yakka under a boiling sun, and a big part of winning the game. A magical moment, captured forever via his mums phone.

Mardelli Rascal Moment: Banksy's 35*, along with a tricky spiralling catch to end the MH innings.

Lemonade moment: Pez nicking off. I swear he was on for a ton, even chasing 147, his batting was pure pleasure to watch.

Next week we play Chipperfield. Choruses of "money money money" echoing from the changing rooms and general feelings of dread as they scored 350 against a side that bowled us out for 150 three weeks ago.
