Match report The 2s had their fiercest adversity yet in a strong Chipperfield side, who had won 5 on the bounce, with more money than sense and a super team comprised of an ex-Kent player, his brother, a Western Australia prem player and some other guns. They are also all spinners which was so fun to face in these conditions presented to us due to endless sunshine and a drought.

We won the toss and decided to bat first, confident that the pitch would break up as it was used more. Unfortunately gun#1 took two worldies at slip to account for Westy and Rudders, and Howes got an absolute seed from gun#2, pitching outside off and turning in sharply to kiss the top of the off bail.

Church and Law just about saw off Hamza Qayyum “we’ll see him off and take on the next bowler”. 10 overs 2/16, well bowled. Taking on the next bowler was impossible and would have proved rather silly. Ex-Kent pro Imran Qayyum ripped through us, 9 overs 5/10 including 3 wickets in 4 balls accounting for Murphy, Balan and Church, who let his dislike for people who get paid to play cricket in div 3 known on his dismissal. Law fell soon after and a rearguard from Alexis Awonuga saw us limp to 140.

We started well with the ball, Chen snicking Chipperfield’s opener off early and castling number 3, then we got back to the good ones. Hamza Qayyum took great pleasure in reaching across and hitting length balls from Winfield over cow. McGhie took 16 off Chen’s last, and I’m not sure any of them were bad balls. A wonder catch from Howes at square leg accounted for McGhie, taken above his head with the ball hit hard. Adshead the bowler. Imran Qayyum came in and finished the job, not nibbling at Murphy’s relentless chat behind the stumps.

All in all. It was pretty boring to play a Chipperfield side who have obviously paid their way to a spot at the top of the division, all their bowlers were all their bats, and you’d hate to be a junior there (didn’t bowl, carded 11, not what cricket is about). We may have lost but at least we’re alright blokes.
