Bushey CC 2nd XI v St Albans Cricket Club 3XI on Sat 22 Aug 2026 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 26

Match report Despite Bushey playing host to Hertfordshire’s greenest wicket (if anyone would like a reminder of what green grass looks like, I can recommend the highlights on play cricket), Street won the toss for the third consecutive week and elected to bat first.

Street and Murray were watchful against the accurate Bushey opening bowlers but were able to accumulate a risk free 50 run partnership for the first wicket. As they began to accelerate, Murray fell to an unfortunate LBW. Dean joined Street and at 70-1 at drinks, the 3s knew a score of at least 200 would be required to be competitive. After drinks, Dean continued his impressive run of form, scoring an imperious 55 from 42 deliveries. When Dean fell, Rosson and Knight continued where he left off, punishing the tiring Bushey bowlers and fielders alike. Street anchored the innings from the other end, falling for 91, the 3s highest individual score of the season to date. 211-5 was the score after 40 overs, 141 runs scored from 120 deliveries after the drinks break.

PD got us the early wicket with the final delivery of his first over, clipping the top of the Bushey skipper’s off stump with an unplayable inswinging delivery. This brought dangerman Aslam to the crease, fresh off making a match winning 96 vs Ickleford the previous week... Step forward, Richard O’Toole. PD’s outswinging delivery enticed the left hander into an aggressive drive with the ball finding the outside edge of Aslam’s bat. O’Toole, diving full length to his left-hand side at first slip, snaffled the one-handed catch centimetres above the ground. A huge moment in the game.

Bushey’s Zaman and Shah were able to build a 50-run partnership for the third wicket before Murray trapped the former LBW. The unfortunate run out of Bushey’s next man Khan, following some good work from PD and Lawrence, left Shah to bat with an unusually large tail for a team pushing for promotion. The plan was simple, keep the set Shah off strike. Murray and Murphy worked well in tandem to starve Shah of the strike and the 10 overs following the run out only went for 43 runs, when the required rate was over six runs per over. The frustrated Shah eventually ran past a deceiving Murphy moon ball; Lawrence duly whipped the bails off and Shah was on his way back to the pavilion for a well-made 72.

The final 10 overs were a relatively low-key affair as the remaining Bushey batsman opted to tick off the additional milestones which secured batting points (in their quest for promotion) rather than chase our now unassailable target. However, there is one moment worth mentioning. Murphy, full of confidence after removing Shah, dared the Bushey number nine to hit him into the trees. With his third ball, after lining Murphy up with his first two deliveries, Bushey’s Mustafa did just that. A huge six down towards the electrical pylons, the only maximum of the game. Rather funny and thanks to the invention of frog box, everyone can give it a watch on play cricket free of charge.

O’Toole and Knight wrapped up the victory for the 3s following an impressive all-round performance. Radlett’s mauling of Dunstable keeps the 3s in the drop zone with two games to go but both Radlett and Dunstable remain catchable, and it can be argued that the Saints may have the easier remaining fixtures of the three teams. Hopefully the forecast improves and the 3s can play host to Harpenden this weekend.
