Luton Womens and Girls CC Womens 1st XI v St Albans Cricket Club Women's 1XI on Sun 28 Jun 2026 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 6 wickets

Match report A bright and breezy afternoon at Lancaster Avenue set the stage for a challenging encounter on a wicket that looked more like a rolling wave than the level surface you hope to expect. St Albans began strongly in the field, working hard as a unit of 10 and showing real commitment despite the pitch’s unpredictable bounce. Luton were led by an aggressive innings from Zainab Khan, who struck 50 from 42 balls, supported by Mariam Hassan Shah’s patient 49*. The Saints kept breaking through at key moments: Rachel removed both Zainab and Zara in a crucial spell, Anum bowled superbly for just 16 runs from her seven overs, and sharp catches from Caitlin and Anum kept the pressure on. Although 44 extras helped Luton to 182 for 4, the overall fielding effort was one of determination and teamwork.

The chase began with real promise thanks to a composed and confident innings from India, whose 32 from 37 balls was the standout performance of our reply. She handled the erratic bounce with impressive calm, finding five boundaries and keeping the scoreboard moving. But once the first wicket fell at 18, the innings collapsed rapidly. Caitlin, Molly, Kara, Amy, Anum and Alicia all fell in quick succession as Luton’s bowlers exploited their home conditions expertly. Zainab’s spell of 4 for 8 and Sidra’s 3 for 9 dismantled the middle order, with balls either rolling dangerously low or leaping unexpectedly to catch out the batters.

There were moments of resistance: Evie battled for 31 balls, and Rachel added a spirited 17 from 18 deliveries to lift the total. Safi finished unbeaten as St Albans reached 84 all out in 19.1 overs, with 21 extras helping push the score forward on a day when runs were hard to come by.

It wasn’t the result we hoped for, but the team showed real fight in the field and glimpses of quality with the bat. And if nothing else, they could walk away knowing they weren’t in Bedford’s shoes, chasing 374 against Broxbourne!
