Match report Saints made the long trip to the remote ground at Ampthill and, after losing the toss, were asked to bat first on a wicket offering some uneven bounce.

Caitlin and Sally gave Saints a solid start, putting on 28 for the first wicket before Caitlin departed for 16. Anum then joined Sally to keep the scoreboard ticking over, but the drinks break sparked a collapse as Anum (12) and Sally (28) fell just before the interval, with Molly dismissed in the first over afterwards.

Captain Arminah then led by example with a superb 47 from just 33 balls, taking the attack to the Ampthill bowlers and falling just three runs short of a deserved half-century. Her innings helped Saints post 163 all out from 30.2 overs – slightly below par, but very much a competitive total.

Ampthill got off to a flyer, reaching 50-0 after 6 before Liv made the breakthrough in the 8th over, bowling one of the openers for 33.

The game then swung firmly in Saints' favour thanks to an outstanding spell from Caitlin, who struck with her first ball before claiming a second wicket in the same over to complete a double-wicket maiden. Supported brilliantly by Paloma and some tight fielding, the pair reduced Ampthill from 92-1 to 123-6, with Caitlin returning exceptional figures of 7-3-10-3 and Paloma 5-0-16-2.

Saints couldn't quite find the breakthrough they needed as Ampthill's captain held her nerve with an unbeaten 63 to guide the home side to victory.

Despite the result, it was a good day out and plenty of positives to take into the final weeks of the season.
