St Albans Cricket Club 3XI v Watford Town CC 3rd XI on Sat 15 Aug 2026 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 4 wickets.

Match report After a slow start unlocking the multiple levels of security at the home of cricket, Street won the toss for the second consecutive week and elected to bat.

Street was joined in the middle by Hingston and they immediately had Watford on the back foot. Some buffet bowling, horrid fielding (worst we’ve seen in Div 7 West this year) and a true batting surface (thank you Fergie!) all contributed to a rapid start. The pair combined for a chanceless 89 from 91 deliveries for the first wicket, finding the boundary frequently and both looked set to go big. Unfortunately, 89-0 became 95-3, Bhatti the man to remove both openers before Sinha Roy was unfortunate to find the hands of everyone’s favourite Watford Town player, TJ.

Knight and Dean got the innings back on track, before Wright increased the run rate late in the innings. Dean made his third half century in the last four weeks, and Wright fell for a well-made 42 from 37. Some attempted scrambling from the rest of the line-up got the score up to 206, the exact same score as the previous week at Ickleford. A big score in SLCG terms but upon reflection, with leg-side wides in play and a lightning-fast outfield, we would have liked another 10-20 runs.

PD continued his good run of form with the ball and struck in the first over. Magee also bowled nicely with the new ball and at 32-1 after 12, the 3s were on top. A flurry of runs either side of the drinks break undone some of our good work, but Telkman removed Kotha’s off stump and Shaw removed the opener Sorathia in the next over, assisted by Hingston’s sharp reflexes. Watford 64-3 after 18 overs.

With the required run rate above a run a ball and two new men at the crease, now was the time to take the game away from Watford. However, Farooqui, TJ, and the AI identified dangerman Bhatti, seized the initiative and continued to find the boundary at frustratingly regular intervals. The score raced up to 183-5 with four overs to go (24 required from 24 balls for those still reading), the 3s were up against it but excellent bowling from Knight and Magee clawed it back leaving Magee to defend ten runs in the last over. Magee only conceded two from the first three deliveries and removed the set Bhatti, caught well in the deep by Knight. Watford skipper Shrungarpure came to the crease and somehow managed to deflect a perfectly aimed yorker off the edge of his bat down to the fine leg boundary for four. We were unable to prevent the consecutively scampered twos and for the third week in a row, the 3s were defeated in the final over of the match.

The 3s now drop into the relegation zone with three games to go. Cue the great escape theme music as we travel to high flying Bushey next week.
