Ickleford CC 2nd XI v St Albans Cricket Club 3XI on Sat 08 Aug 2026 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 2 wickets

Match report The 3s made one of their longest journeys of the season up the A1 to Ickleford and immediately won the first psychological battle of the day by arriving before the opposition. The second battle was also won when Street correctly called tails and elected to bat.

Stalwarts Murray and Rudlin opened and were watchful against some tight bowling from Ickleford. Murray was unfortunate to fall to a leading edge just as he began to accelerate, and Dean quickly followed - strangled down the legside immediately after the first drinks break. Wickets continued to fall at frustratingly regular intervals, preventing any acceleration in run rate during the middle overs. Rudlin and Hingston falling to Ickleford’s Duncan Jenner (more on him later), Jimmy Rosson unfortunately caught behind having looked in imperious form. 104-5 in the 26th over.

Wright was joined in the middle by Street and together were able to produce a 73-run partnership from 68 deliveries to reignite the innings. The tiring Ickleford attack were on the back foot and were further punished by PD and Charlie Knight, who were able to add a further 27 runs from the final 15 deliveries. Knight notably struck one over the long on boundary for a 90+ metre six and would attempt the same shot again on the final ball of the innings, only to be dismissed by a smart boundary catch from Duncan Jenner. The 3s finished 206/8 which in hindsight may have been 10-20 runs short but with some quirks in the wicket, St Albans were marginally the happier of the two teams at the halfway stage.

PD and Magee took the new ball and were quickly into their work. PD continued his excellent form with the ball, finishing with figures 8-4-18-0 and was very unlucky not have a wicket against his name. Magee made the breakthrough in the 8th over and this was quickly followed by the second wicket, a tricky skyward catch held by Hingston off the bowling of Knight in his first over. Ickleford now had Richard Brown and skipper Adam Ross in the middle, both currently sitting in the top ten of the Div 7 West run scorers this season. Each offered two chances apiece early in their innings but unfortunately none went to hand. They were quick to find their rhythm and runs were flowing despite the best efforts of Knight, Shaw, Dean and Murray.

It was Dean who eventually ended the 96-run partnership, a juggled catch at long on from Knight to remove Adam Ross. Four balls later Richard Brown was following Ross back to pavilion. A tempting Murray delivery was hit flat and firmly out to PD at long on. PD came hurtling in at full speed and produced a sensational full length diving catch. Catch of the season winner without a doubt. 140-4 with 12 overs to go, two new men at the crease, game on.

The run rate dropped and wickets continued to fall. The Div 7 West Jonty Rhodes (PD) produced a direct hit, and Rudlin hung on to his first three catches of the season in quick succession. However, at the other end was Duncan Jenner - a regular Ickleford 1s player with over 9700 league runs and 320 league wickets to his name. Unfortunately for us he had “home only” availability this weekend. Jenner’s chanceless 47 from 35 deliveries guided Ickleford to victory with three deliveries and two wickets to spare.

A brilliant game of cricket, refreshingly played in the right spirit throughout. Plenty of positives to take away from the performance and our significant bonus point haul increased our buffer to the relegation zone. Attentions now turn to a huge game vs Watford Town 3s at Sandpit Lane next week. Relegation rivals Northwood Town and Radlett face off, so only a win vs Watford Town will prevent the 3s from dropping into the relegation zone.
