St Albans Cricket Club 1XI v Leverstock Green CC 1st XI on Sat 09 May 2026 at 12:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 6 wkts
Match report
A fortunately bright forecast from what had looked an ominous week greeted the 1XI at Clarence Park, for a potentially tricky encounter against Leverstock Green. A side always easy to play when ahead of the game, but horrible to play when up against it.
The day was made all the more special by a combination of factors. The Regans convinced the umpire was called Raj (he just wasn’t), Coulman turning up in a DIY Brewpoint gym vest, and Hounslow bringing a dead fish to the game.
Skipper Baylis forgot his teamsheet, forgot to toss a coin to the correct side and as a result we were bowling first. Jonesy claimed the opening breakthrough, nipped back and catching him on the back pad, just minutes after Baylis dropped a rego at slip. He then preceded to bowl 3 overs to a man who was pressing the wrong button on the Xbox controller, seemingly unable to hit the ball. We then somehow let him get to 25. Lockie Ferguson from the other end after a 9 ball loosener found the nip backer to claim the top of off for the other opener. It was a great delivery, made to look even better by the batter making it seem like the ball had gone in 28 different directions.
Spells from Adshead (bowled someone off a front foot no ball with the ball then flying for 4 off the stumps, chin up champ), Baylis (angry) and Mulvaney (Spanish) followed whilst the Leverstock Green overseas moved into his stride, who in fairness looked a class above the other 10 players in the Levy Green lineup. A slightly worrying spell between him and the skipper was halted by first Mulvaney and then the returning Ferguson. Mixed in with a couple of wickets from Adshead and Leverstock Green had completely collapsed from 170-4 to 199-9, still with 10 overs to bat. What looked like a potential 280 chase was turned into 218 when Baylis took the final wicket, well held by 6 a side bagsman Regan.
Regan Jr and Bancroft went about their work as they so often do with intent, Jamie in particular taking a liking to the buffet that was on offer in the first 6 overs, the score motoring to 52-0. Both bought up well made 50s in good time before perishing just a couple of deliveries later, but Saints in a commanding position, well ahead of the rate and with plenty left in the shed. Joe played well for 48 before playing around a straight one, Coulman fell for 9 trying to finish with the fireworks, whilst Jones at the other end was timing the pants off everything to reach 37 red. All that was left was for Priyesh to avoid his TFC. Taking an easy single into the leg side, with 4 overthrows following, rather summing up Leverstock Green’s day.
A strong team performance all round, a very professional job done in a fixture we have historically found tricky. HMS walk the league has set sail and pulls into port at Ampthill Town next week who are newly promoted to Division 1.
MOTM: Will Bancroft (51 & 3 dismissals)
SOTD: Jamie Regan back foot punch for 4
HMOTD: “My name’s not Raj” for the second time
