St Albans Cricket Club 1XI v Letchworth Garden City CC 1st XI on Sat 23 May 2026 at 12:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 145

Match report The Saints were back to CP this weekend looking to bounce back after a last over loss vs Ampthill the week before.

An interesting start to the day with the weekly Simmons ritual led by Badsy and Mulvaney ending up in Greggs, arguments made for quantity over quality.

The skipper deciding however the opposite was required for the warm-up, keep it short and sharp and get back inside as soon as possible. Sadly Baylis decided to forget the quality part of the exercise and started off the warm-up by taking a diving catch straight into the warm-up bag. To then build on this he announced that he would probably have a bowl, this idea quickly shut down due to the fact in was absolutely boiling (DOTD becoming fairly obvious here). However, he did finally get something right, won the toss and had a bat.

Priyesh and Buzz went out to open up the batting, the latter getting a bit of a seed, jagging back through the gate and leaving St Albans 1 down inside the 2nd over. This brought in Joe Regan, fresh from his week off at Olivia Dean, would he be the man we need, smashing 40 exclusively in 4s until becoming the 1st victim of the very dangerous full toss. Priyesh having batted well was next to fall, victim to yet another pretty bad LBW decision, opting to ask for the 3rd umpire on the way back to the pavilion, sadly this call went unanswered, so it was back to the shed.

What followed was both runs and wickets falling at a consistent rate, the dangerous full toss catching out a couple more of the batsmen, just as a partnership was building a wicket would fall, leaving us to rebuild again. Coulman top scoring with 46 after his headloss at being dropped to 6, stumped charging down the track the ball after his very specific with the captain about batting to the end. St Albans set 255 from their 50, quite a few short of the perceived par score and a good bowling performance would be required.

What followed could only be described as a bowling masterclass from the two opening seamers, Rooney opened up the account for the year with his first ball of the season, nicking off the opener straight to the keeper’s gloves. Jonesy soon followed TMC making a regulation catch look very tricky at backward point to dismiss the other opener. This brought in the Letchworth overseas, some good comments about having to fly halfway across the world to play a 1xi game. This was quickly ended with Rooney catching the edge and a very good catch from TMC at 2nd slip to send him back to the shed. Rooney and Jones continued to tear apart the top order Rooney finishing with 10 overs 4-19.

The introduction of spin with Ashish and Josh kept the pressure on and wickets continued to fall at a steady rate, apart from Letchworth’s number 3 who was definitely a man lacking a plan, 31 (78) a man that seemed to have no interest in scoring runs or was aware of the concept of required run rate. However, mid on and mid-off were brought up and ash floated one up there for him, it went straight into the hands of mid-on, his first attacking shot all day and he had given it away! Fair to say that innings was not bringing the crowds back to cricket.

The spinners eventually finished the job and Letchworth were all out for 110, so short of the batting bonus point anyway, leaving the saints with a 145-run win. A seriously good reply to the game last week, especially against a team that had won their first 2 games.
