Match report Another scorching Saturday at Clarence Park rolled around, with Lutonian the visitors this week.

With St Albans knowing that they need to keep the ball rolling in order to get promoted back into the Championship, only two people turned up on time, with Baylis himself arriving 20 minutes late to his own meet time.

The tone was set for the day, and the coin went up, with skipper Baylis being on the right side of it and electing to field in the heat. A decision which left a few eyes rolling in the changing rooms due to the amount of suncream needed to be applied, but one which has had a 100% success rate so far this season.

Will squared took the new ball, as always, and started very well… as always. Jones got the first scalp of the day, with Rooney following closely behind. Both seamers finished with one victim to their name, but Rooney was perhaps on the wrong side of some lacklustre fielding from his own team, which he managed to keep his cool about rather well.

Baylis then introduced himself… before Jones hooked him and wisely introduced spin.

Mulvaney struck first with Padki soon after. The pair shared five wickets between them, carrying on where both Wills had left off.

Monis was introduced and bowled with control, being rewarded with a wicket and a great economy rate. He really tightened up the runs from the Luton middle order. He bowled in partnership with the returning burglar, Capaldi. There was no surprise that Max did what he always does in cleaning up the tail.

Lutonian set a target of 174 for the Saints, which we believed to be about 60 runs under par, but we know how funny a game cricket can be.

Regan Jr and Patel walked out to open, and they set the tone early by hitting the bad ball to the fence. They raced to a 50 partnership without any trouble and were giving us a great start.

This was until Patel seemed to have been shot by a sniper and produced one of the dismissals of the season. Walking down the pitch having a big swoosh, he simply kept on walking off the pitch, much to the wicketkeeper’s amusement, who just took the bails off.

Regan Sr strode to the crease to join his brother, with Jr raising the bat for a well-made half-century before falling to some ‘yum yum’ bowling and being caught on the circle.

Padki joined Regan Sr at the crease, with both rotating the strike with ease and putting the bad ball away. The pair knocked the ball around until we reached the target with 13 overs to spare.

A well-deserved victory on a hot day, which was ultimately won by a good bowling performance from the Saints, restricting Plutonian to an under-par score.

Four games remaining, with the Saints most likely needing to win all four to get promoted out of a very tight top of Division 1. We travel to Northwood next week for the next battle.
