Match report St Albans travelled to Northwood knowing 30 points were needed to keep the promotion hopes going. However a less than optimal start at the arrival to the game. Joe Regan and Josh Mulvaney arrived nursing the kind of hangovers that don't respond well to a day in the field, and Dan Baylis had already had his morning ruined by a ULEZ charge.

The coin went up and St Albans found themselves batting first, some insider info from Ben Adshead revealed this was always Northwood’s plan, playing for points rather than a win, not often you see accept defeat before a ball had been bowled but there we are.

The innings unfortunately started quite well for Northwoods anti relegation cricket. Jamie Regan fell for 8 fishing at a wide one, with the score still in single figures, and Joe Regan — clearly still feeling the effects of the night before — followed for a golden duck, bowled by a bit of a seed but Jamie was quick to let him know it was just a straight one he missed. When Priyesh Patel also departed for 9 with St Albans three down cheaply, the innings needed someone to dig in.

But It got a lot worse before it got better, wickets kept tumbling through the middle order and St Albans slipped to a genuinely alarming 101 for 7, against potential relegation fodder Northwood this would be a terrible way to lose the title hopes. Stuck on a total that on any normal day would have meant a score well under 150.

However, watching the wickets fall from the other end was Ashish. Coming in at four with the top order in disarray, he proceeded to bat through practically the entire innings, over 40 overs at the crease, while wickets fell around him at the other end. It was, by some distance, the innings of the day and a genuine match winning knock. Will Jones fell for 21 to a relatively interesting decision, hit outside the line with the umpires finger going up before he could even look up. Steve Perrin soon followed, rushed by a fierce 45mph short ball. Monis also at the receiving end of another rogue decision, snicking the ball into his thigh pad, and put down by slip, however the early celeb-appeal for caught behind was enough for the umpire to give him out LBW? Confusion all around.

At 101 for 7 Padki genuinely looked like he was batting on a different wicket to everyone else, untroubled by whatever the rest of the order kept finding difficult. He then found an ally in Josh Mulvaney, the pair adding useful runs for the eighth wicket, before a superb ninth-wicket stand with Will Rooney — 73 runs added between 133 and 206 — took the total from respectable to match-winning. Padki was finally out for a monumental 113, St Albans closed on 210 all out well and truly saved by that knock from Ashish, however it was still a low total to defend and it would have to be a good bowling performance that followed.

Defending 210, Jonesy set the tone immediately, having Raveenthiraraja caught and bowled for 0 inside his first over, then came back to remove Reeve and Northwood’s librarian as well, a superb spell of 3 for 20 that did the early damage. Will Rooney held up an end alongside him but struggled on the uneven crease, so St Albans turned to their middle-overs options.

Ashish, again landed a big blow, having the Northwood overseas, who had begun to threaten a rescue act on 64, caught by Jamie Regan. Monis the followed Joshy from the other end, again with superb control over the ball, never missing his areas, then removed Shah cheaply and, more importantly, ended Walcott's patient 34 off 79 balls, the innings that had briefly given Northwood something to build around.

That let Dan Baylis in for the closing squeeze (burgling the tail), spurred on by the ULEZ charge room 2 for 7 off his 4 overs. Josh Mulvaney, evidently no worse for wear as the day wore on, came back at the death to bowl the Brooker brothers in successive overs and finish the innings he took 2 for 18 as Northwood folded for 137 in 42.4 overs, well short of the target.
