Match report A top of the table clash arrived at CP 1st vs 2nd 30 points required to keep the season alive for the saints. Knowing the severity of the game Baylis was on time for once, however it appears that in his rush to get to the ground he had got changed in the dark and come dressed as a lifeguard.

Bondi rescue went out for yet another massive toss and same as last time against Reed lost the toss and was sent into bat.

After some debate on the batting order generated by the brains trust of Coulman and Mulvaney on the 18th hole at Harpenden Common GC the skipper was quick to remind his troops that you can find the batting order in your inbox.

After a rallying speech from Mardelli (not newsletter appropriate) the boys were ready to go out and score some runs on what looked to be a belter of a pitch.

The Saints made a positive start. Jamie Regan (30) and Will Bancroft put on 60 for the first wicket before Regan fell to Jack Tidey, falling to the only catch the keeper took cleanly all day, Regan quick to blame Baylis for the ‘unnecessary’ two drinks breaks. Bancroft continued to build with Joe Regan, the pair adding a further 38 for the second wicket to take the score to 138. Bancroft was eventually out for a well-made 54 off 86 balls, falling for the cunning trap and trying to clear the 80m boundary at long on. Joe Regan (20) followed shortly after, claiming it was the hardest track he had batted on all year, maybe not such a road. St Albans lost their way briefly — Oliver Coulman (1) and Josh Mulvaney (1) departed cheaply both promoted up the order to inject some tempo into the game and up the RR, maybe they should have focused on their own batting rather than where everybody else was…

William Jones steadied things and then accelerated, top-scoring with a brisk 56 off 58 balls to push the total from a slightly wobbly 153 for 5 back up towards 200, adding 40 in a quick stand before he was caught behind off Julien Fynn. Priyesh Patel and Will Rooney saw the innings home unbeaten, adding a further 11 in the closing overs to take St Albans to 204 for 6 from their 50. A score on the board, but it would have to be a serious bowling performance to win the game.

Defending 204, William Jones and Will Rooney shared the new ball. Jones struck first, having Thomas Thorpe lbw for 17 with the opening stand worth 28, a huge wicket knowing that their overseas can be a dangerous player on his day.

It was Max Capaldi who did the real damage, delivering the pick of the bowling figures with 5 for 34 from his 10 overs. He removed Ward for a well-made 36 to break the second-wicket stand, then a stroke of genius from Rob in the Scorebox, tactically allowing it to run out of charge to force a break in the game and bring out the flippy scoreboard. This tactical genius brought on just the break St Albans needed, forcing their batter to play a leave off Max’s bowling, worthy of the flippy scoreboard, with the ball “turning” and hitting middle. Knowing we just needed to break through their top 4 this was a huge wicket.

Sadly during the Scorebox mayhem a wicket was missed but max also removed their number 6 first ball, long way to travel to field 50 overs and bat 6, chin up. A couple of balls later St Albans struck again with Monis also among the wickets (Greaves for 4), Capaldi returned again to account for Robert Lankester (22) and, in a second double-wicket burst alongside Josh Mulvaney, Hughes (8) fell in the same passage of play that saw Tidey (8) hole out off Mulvaney, on the 2nd attempt after Rooney was done by the Astro trying to take a high ball, leaving Reed 125 for 7 and the game as good as gone.

Fynn dug in for a battling 23 off 56 to give the Reed innings some respectability, eventually bowled by Haris to end the innings on 170 for 9 as the overs ran out.

A huge win for the saints to keep the title hopes alive.
