St Albans Cricket Club 4XI v Bamville CC Saturday 1st XI on Sat 09 May 2026 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 88 runs
Match report
St Albans IVs opened their 2026 season at Sandpit Lane with a fixture against local foes Bamville, hopeful of continuing their run of successes in a match up that has a spicy history.
Captain Davey, with a lineup loaded with bowlers, duly won the toss and wisely chose to bowl first. With the wicket having been worked on vigorously in the off season (thanks to club stalwart Steve Ferguson), the pitch looked in good order.
Newcomer Paramesh and Deshpande opened up but the season’s first dismissal was a second over run out, courtesy of a fine diving stop from Walker, Bamville opener Shazad failing to get beyond his first delivery of 2026. PD was quickly shaping the ball and had an early wicket of his own and should have had another but for a missed chance. Fortunately the drop cost little as Deshpande was granted an LBW.
Davey didn’t take long to get into the action, a full toss smashed to square leg for a comfortable catch by Winfield. At 4/42, Bamville were not in a good place and St Albans were enjoying themselves. The innings settled into a calmer flow in the run up to the drinks break, the visitors reaching 5/79 at the half way mark. The skipper cautioned that the visitors bat deep, imploring his team to keep up the energy.
There was an air of listlessness after drinks; perhaps a diet of T20 watching had weakened Saints’ readiness for a 40 over run out? Bamville were up for the fight and bided their time through a solid spell from Walker (1/26) with Winfield starting well, too. At the 30 over mark, the game had drifted to 7/108, at which point the 8th wicket pair of Mayank and Anirudh upped the ante, adding 80 runs and seeing the score climb to 193.
The IVs had no answer to some measured batting that found the gaps no matter where the fielders were placed - a few too many poor deliveries helped things along. Davey’s figures of 3/44 were the pick for Saints.
The momentum was all with the visitors as Maroof and Moksy stepped out to take on the chase. After a slow but comfortable start, the wickets started to fall in the face of some good bowling. Before long, Saints had slumped to 5/30, with pre-season star Shaw out for a duck. “Cricket is the worst game in the world!” he proclaimed with grim accuracy.
Nisar Jr, in the midst of studying for GCSEs, could only concur as his frustrating day was curtailed by some poor running between wickets, Maroof, who had fought hard for 16, carrying some guilt.
Numbers 7, 8 and 9 - Paramesh, wicketkeeper Roberts and Davey - at least made it to double figures, but no-one reached 20 as Bamville executed the last rites. Saints all out for 105.
Not the IVs best day out, but there is plenty more cricket to be played in 2026.
