Match report
A new look 1s team this week to face Levestock Green - not to worry though the teams usual style of lateness hadn’t been forgotten, Howeson clearly not used to this level of leniency under the iron fist of Rory law was the only one on time to the Simmons meet time, spotted looking rather confused opposite the main road as to the whereabouts of his team mates.

However, once all the team had arrived and scoffed down a quick Simmons a pretty sharp warm up followed. The coin went up and yet again Baylis had lost the toss and we were sent out to field in the heat. After a quick cap presentation for debutants Westy and Monis and a team talk extremely similar to the week before we were ready to go.

New look team, new look opening partnership with the ball, the absence of Rooney meant Baylis and Jones would have a go with the new ball. Jonesy was the first to strike, trapping their opener in front of all 3 without troubling the scoreboard. The pair continued well, some half chances going down and the batsmen riding their luck, until finally the other opener succeeded in chopping on after about his 4th attempt to do so. Perhaps winners’ comments of ‘tickle his wood’ and ‘touch his pole’ were getting through to the opening bowlers.

After controlling the powerplay well the saints continued to apply the pressure, making Leverstock work hard for every run and sticking to their lines well. The new dead ball rule made its first appearance of the year, a short ball from Baylis gloved into the helmet before it was caught behind by Jithin sadly not given. However, Jones struck in the very next over, Mulvaney finally holding onto one in the slips, and then the very next ball sending back their number 5 caught behind by Jithin. When asked if he wanted a different field for the hattrick ball he simply replied, “I already have 4 don’t change it.”

After 19 overs Leverstock Green were 47/4, the Saints well and truly on top, however the 20th over and Baylis’ last then got hit for 21- talk about leading from the front. Suddenly Leverstock’s score looking a lot better than it was 5 minutes ago. Thankfully that was the end of Baylis’ bowling and Adshead and Mulvaney were brought into the attack, both continuing the theme of bowling tight lines and building the pressure back up again.

Ben was the first to make a breakthrough, dismissing their night watchman after Josh dropped him 5 overs previously. As many of you may know, a drop can be a costly mistake but luckily not in this instance as an interesting innings of 0 from 32 balls ensued - perhaps bat first wasn’t the right call?

With one big wicket left to take, their overseas, a dangerous player who we know can take the game away from us, especially on a bit of a low scoring pitch, we had to take our chance. Mulvaney striking him on the pad and despite the big stride up went the umpires finger and Saints were now well and truly on top. The next bat in clearly didn’t have plans to stay for long as he ran himself out by half a pitch in the next over as the rather controlled throw from Ashish finally made its way back the bowlers end.

What followed was a small period of resistance from the opposition , but continued tight bowling wasn’t giving much away, until a moment of magic from Monis got the Saints the breakthrough, a ball hit hard through extra as Monis simply sticks out a hand for the most nonchalant one handed catch ever. Ash then bowled their number 8 and Winners ended things with a direct hit to prevent himself from bowling another over - Leverstock Green finishing all out for 149.

Debutant West and young gun Howse walked out to open the batting, Westy getting off the mark with a lovely clip through mid-wicket for 4, maybe it was a road after all! After a couple more nice shots Westy snicked behind to a good ball from their seamer and the saints were 15/1. This brought Ashish to the crease who dismissed his first ball for 4 over point, quite simply don’t bowl there.

From here Howeson and Ashish built a really strong start for the Saints, rotating the strike well with Howeson in particular finding the boundary with ease, playing some excellent shots through cover and point. However, trying to go back over mid-off was the end of Matt ‘Sooryavanshi’ Howeson, but not after building an excellent platform.

Jonesy joined Ash for a brief cameo, including a pretty large 6 into the pavilion but soon top edged one and a good catch by slip running back had him back in the hutch. Churchy came in and went out, sadly not troubling the scoreboard and fears of the famed St Albans collapse were creeping in.

Joshy was next to join Ashish and after maybe 2 overs of some sensible batting played the same hoick across the line at 4 balls in a row, missing two and snicking the other 2 for 4, with those on the lovely bench at mid-off barely able to watch. Ashish kept going along strongly finding the gaps in the field and putting away the bad ball, falling just short of 50, but still a crucial knock, walking off having done enough to put us firmly in the driving seat.

In came Monis to see us home, some excellent club selection, hitting to the shorter side, leaving it just short of the fielders and letting it spin past them accumulating some quick runs before Mulvaney finished off the game with a 4. A great effort all around and thank you for everyone that stepped up.
