Match report The St Albans 4th XI mid-season revival found itself journeying to the idyllic ground of Kimpton, currently sitting bottom of the table. The 4s were graced with the presence of some returning 3rd XI players this week, Chaz Smith and Jamie Telkman adding themselves to the bowling line up.

The gameweek started with great debate, thrown up by Hingston’s recently shared AI summaries of both the opposition and St Albans selection policy. Should Saunders be bowling for the 3s? Should Tom Banks be playing 4th XI as a batsmen? Is Davey competent? All questions AI set out to answer. The last of these questions was raised by none other than JT as the teams arrived at the ground, the bowler declaring “You’ve got to bat first today mate” having seen the ground.

With these words ringing in his ears Davey walked to the middle to toss, heads called, heads landed, Davey selects to bowl. The team slightly bemused, Davey feeling confident.

Opening the bowling was Smith and Husain, with the first couple of overs calling into question the captain’s decision to bowl. The Kimpton opener taking an early liking to Chaz’s pace and swing and dismissing him for a few boundaries in the first overs. But it wasn’t to last long, the player holing out to Khan at mid-on for an aggressive 30. Husain joined the act soon after, bowling the second opener for 10. After first drinks the conversations were clear, keep getting wickets and restrict the oppo to under a hundred. The third wicket came soon after, Chaz getting another to cap a fine bowling spell, ending with figures of 8-2-31-2. Husain would finish with similarly strong figures, 7-2-18-1.

The next wicket was village cricket at its finest. Telkman, introduced into the attack at first change, bowled a rank full toss which the new man spooned straight to square leg only for Husain to drop a simple catch. The batsmen, upon seeing the catch dropped, turned and set off for a second run only to find himself run out significantly out of his ground.

Telkman would take two further wickets in his spell, a plumb LBW and a well earned caught behind. At the other end Paramesh bowled very well, and was unfortunate to not get reward, finishing his 5 overs for just 8 runs, his inswing and probing lines proving too hard to get away for the Kimpton bats.

Winfield and Witty were introduced into the attack to find the final wickets, and find them they did. Within a four over spell the final four wickets were taken for just eight runs. Winfield up to his usual tricks, his accuracy and pace undoing two batsmen. Witty bowled with similar control, and found himself getting a caught and bowled and caught behind very quickly. Kimpton all out for 107, on a day which looked like a batting paradise.

After a quick turnaround Hingston and Thomas took to the pitch and both were immediately in belligerent moods. Thomas was the early aggressor, hitting multiple boundaries in the first few overs, although onlookers would observe that he also managed to middle a number of shots straight to cover, costing himself about 20 runs on the day. Hingston was soon on the act, showing his usual power but also playing some delightful glances off his legs to move to a swift 50. The back of the chase broken in the first 10 overs.

The only hope for the oppo came when Thomas was dismissed for 30, bowled by a good ball. This brought to the crease Khan, who clearly had evening plans, dismissing his first three balls to the boundary. The target of 108 chased in just 15 overs.

Another win for the 4s, in brutal fashion. An all round performance started with the ball and finished with the composure and power of Thomas and Hingston. 30 points in the bag, and back to clarence park by 16:30 to see the 2s play.
