Match report Another weekend and another day with mercury reaching alarming levels for the cricketing community of South East England.

The SACC 1XI had new ideas to cool the team down, as Ben Adshead dropped a message on the WhatsApp group that he’d purchased a paddling pool! Unfortunately for the returning Coulman he was unawares of such updates as his phone had found its way to Norwood Junction after making the wonderful decision to leave it on the train the night previous.

Nevertheless after a much shorter warm up than usual, the pleads to all that’s holy from the home side that skipper Baylis won the toss were answered and the home side would have a bat.
As the openers donned their pads, the brains trust of Baylis, Mulvaney, Adshead, Perrin and McCormick donned their swimming trunks and began inflating and filling the paddling pool.

Not much attention was paid to action on the field as most in the park looked on with bemusement as the wise men filled, emptied, moved, refilled, emptied, moved and refilled again the paddling pool.

Meanwhile, with news of his next Toy Story film nearing Buzz got to work trying to restore his own faith in his batting. Him and Priyesh got the scoreboard ticking until Buzz befell to as self proclaimed yorking himself from a half volley. Priyesh lived a charmed life with at least one absolute dolly evading the fielder until he also fell for a nicely made 20 odd.

Regan and Jones began the rebuild before Regans straight drive clipped the finger of the bowler and Jones unable to perform a 3 point turn was left stranded and was trudging back for another 20 odd.
Coulman came and went, a nice ball to get him but potentially with the thoughts of a 3 hour round trip to Norwood Junction his mind was elsewhere. Perrin the next man in built his innings nicely alongside Regan until in true Joe style chased a wide and also fell for another 20 odd.

Perrin carried on his form the following week and alongside TMC got the scoreboard moving nicely in the baking heat. Perhaps the pre bat cool down in the paddling pool was worthwhile.

Pez then fell for a well made 37, slapping on to mid on. Perhaps at 176-6 the pitch was not just a drop in of the M25 as everyone had suggested. In truth at this point a combination of poor shotmaking, some good bowling and some bad luck had left the saints with 8 overs to bowl slightly behind the 8 ball.

Enter stage left Josh Capaldi. The Spanish number 8 has obviously been spending some time in Leighton Buzzard learning the art of the gub. Boundary after boundary ensued with his 46 off 27 balls (at least 70% of these runs coming in front of square on the leg side) being extremely important to leave the saints at the end with 238 the target to defend. Some important lower order partnerships between TMC and both Perrin and Mulspainey the different all in all for the home side.
The Wills once again proving themselves a formidable open partnership, not only for the bowling but also for the verbals. Bancroft, Coulman, McCormick and Mulvaney trying in vein to hide their amusement at the torrent of questions given to the batsmen by the pair as they rocked the Chorleywood top order.

Jones taking all 3 to leave the travellers 37-3 after 12 overs. Rooney unfortunate to have the No.4 dropped twice in two balls by Buzz and Baylis leaving no option for him to shout his disgust instead at the batsmen rather than the skipper.
With the introduction of that man Josh Chorleywood were in real trouble at 82–5 at drinks and the home sides attention turned to how fast they could finish the game - especially Coulman stood any chance of getting to South London and back in time for the football.

However, this “lacks a daisy” approach ended up with the saints unable to take another wicket for the best part of 18 overs a frustration began to set in. A turnout for the bookies saw Baylis turn to ultra part time leg spin of Coulman to bring a bit of chaos.

This bowling was not threatening (of course) however it did somehow manage to draw a run out, an excellent stop my McCormick at covers and a somewhat steady throw from Coulman saw the all important wicket fall.

Mulvaney and Adshead with the ball for the final overs saw off the overs. Mulvaney taking more to end up agonisingly 1 wicket short of a very well deserved 5fer, leaving Adshead the tricky task of defending 13 from his final over. Some of the onlooking members would have most certainly been betting against him (Adam Murphy).

Fortunately Badsys final over only went for 6, a wonderful spell at the death from him. The Saints taking home the 30 points, albeit much too close for comfort than they had previously hoped.

Overall a solid display in the heat.

A tough trip to Hitchin next week for the 1s as they battle to get atop the league and pushing for the all important promotion.
