Match report This was a game that very few wanted to play. Saturday evening was spent with half the squad at CP talking about cancelling and going to Radlett to watch Middlesex. Deciding that this would be poor form to cancel (as there is no team to get promoted to if you refuse to play Sunday 1s), a few of us still went to the boot but did decide we should play. It was during this time that a poll was put out to the Sunday 1s chat as to who was going to captain and by some way, A Wright won despite this being his 3rd ever game of chess valley (so new to the team that he wasn’t on the group chat to see the poll).

Sunday morning started with a car journey in which Badsy/Baylis and Wright decided that the best course of action was to bat, score no runs and be done with the game as soon as possible. This plan was destroyed as quickly as it had been made as Badsy drove too slowly so the captain was late for the toss and Westy failed to win the toss - St Albans were put in to field.

With only have 10 players, we knew this was going to be a tough 45 overs where we needed discipline and avoid getting hit onto the road at Chorleywood (Badsys 1st over led to a car getting hit - plan failed).

Bowling throughout the innings was steady. An opening pair of Badsy and Baylis led to 2 wickets including a surprise catch from A Wright and Badsy bowling their other opener. Witty/Ahaan bowling partnership was again solid with Ethan picking up a wicket (good catch from ash) and Ahaan with 2 (a caught and bowled and another surprise catch from Wright). During this time we saw a rare good bit of fielding in which Westy ran out their number 4. When I say it was rare, this is no insult to Westy and very much targeted at the team display, but I’ll get onto the team fielding in the next paragraph.
Westy had an expensive first over (another car hit) but after this bowled a strong spell including bowling their number 5 and 8 bats.
Baylis and Daiwik finished off the oppo with a wicket each.

Fielding: this was nothing short of a horror show. It was pointed out before the game that the line up maybe didn’t have the strongest fielders within the club. Despite this, the first 14 overs in particular and the game as a whole was the worst fielding display cricket has ever seen.

Highlight 1: inability from basically everyone to get body behind ball. The word hologram could be used for a fair few moments. Too many moments to remember and write out.

Highlight 2: Baylis. On paper most would think that he would be one of the safer pair of hands within the team and so being put at long off seemed like a good decision. However, whether due to skill or a hatred for Westy, Baylis decided to forget how to catch. To give some credit for the first drop, he did cover some good ground. However once there, the ball went straight through his hands. The second left 9 people in silence (Ben started giggling). The ball was hit straight to Baylis who looked to have it, then juggled it up and then failed to grab the juggle. He proceeded to stare at the ball on the floor whilst the field was in shock.

Highlight 3: the bat blocks a ball towards Daiwik who is quite close in. However given the speed of the ball, it should have been an easy pick up. Rather than stopping it, it just rolled through his legs. This led to the bats wanting to run a quick single. Baylis tried to prevent this by throwing the ball at the keepers end, it rebounded off Moksy and the batsmen took an overthrow and came back. Trying to prevent this, Wright throws the ball at the bowlers end and misses - batsmen came back for 3.

Highlight 4: keeping. Moksy whilst normally a solid keeper behind the stumps decided to blame the physical gloves that he was donated for the day and asked how old the gloves were even when the ball just ran past him (he didn’t get a glove to it on the occasion he asked me so unsure how it was the gloves fault). Unfortunately Moksy may have a broken finger from keeping and Badsy stepped up - village. He kept surprisingly well and put his body on the line when required.

Highlight 5: this is a painful one to type. I am not exactly known to be great in the field. A reputation so great that in recent league games I have often found myself at fine leg and in one game this included fine leg to fine leg for 12 overs. However despite all my fielding moments of the past (dropped catches, kicking balls for 4 etc) this was quite clear of all the rest. Standing at square leg, the batsman has tapped the ball where it was running past me but not very quickly. I ran after it, flirted with the idea of picking the ball up on 3/4 occasions with my right hand, then performed a step over of the ball as maybe my left hand would be better. Then stepped back over to try again with my right hand. This was more successful as after about 30ish metres I finally picked the ball up. Only issue being I noticed a white line below me (some call it a boundary). I proceeded to put my hands on my head and the entire team and oppo were not sure what happened. I would have liked to have not included this moment in the report but felt I had to as Badsy described watching the moment as a “social experiment”.

Despite all this, the oppo were kept to under 300. Whilst 295 was a large score - given at least 95 of them were fielding, could have been worse.

The batting innings started off with Moksy and Deb. Before they walked out, Wright who decided to do some captaincy during the day, tried to persuade Baylis to umpire the first stint with Badsy as bats 9/10 seemed logical. However, pizzagate was in full force as Baylis tucked into a large veggie pizza and garlic bread from Dominoes.

Batting was good. Moksy and Deb knew the target was high and started quickly. Some shots played well and others slapped (their captain approved of these), they started really brightly and quite quickly got the required rate down to 6. Deb was bowled for 40 (off just 30 balls) but Moksy was no where near done. Despite their wonderful batting, it is worth noting that due to some questionable calling, both batsman ended up at the same end twice. However neither were run out, still unsure how.

Moksy continued to bat for 104 balls and raced away to a season high of 117! This was the innings St Albans needed. After eventually getting out, Moksy revealed to us that he was struggling to hold the bat as his finger might be broken. Maybe just have a broken finger every week. A mention is also required for his shadow batting. As anyone who has had the pleasure of watching this great man bat, he likes to swing quite hard. If at any point during this innings, he missed the ball swinging a bit too hard, he decided to shadow bat an extravagant leave (think Marnus Labuschagne ‘No Run’ type leave). No one really knew why he kept practicing it as he never once played it to an actual ball. No one else scored 117 so maybe Moksy knows better.

Batting highlights also included Ahaan who scored a run a ball 50. I would describe his run scoring but this report is already long - think of steady proper batting, hitting some cones etc and that will do. I would rather talk about the run outs. With run outs always looking likely, it had looked like Ahaan had been run out however ash conveniently couldn’t be bothered to move to give himself a proper view of it and therefore gave it not out. The lack of movement and decision led to some criticism from Baylis. This was ironic. Baylis (post Dominoes) went into umpire. Despite both bats being right handed, our 1s captain got confused and stood at point. We later asked why he did this and he said he didn’t know. Soon after this, Ahaan was nearly run out but quite clearly had got his bat in. Baylis who also hadn’t moved to see it properly decided to wait till the oppo appeal was over and then raised his finger. A bad decision but it did lead to pure confusion from Ash who was watching on the boundary and a slight headloss from Ahaan.

Daiwik (19), Wright (10) and Westy (5), Ethan (11) all fell to an ok bowler towards the end. Some of the shots weren’t great but nothing massively to report on.

This brought Badsy to the crease with the team needing around 15 to win off 5 overs. First ball, straight 4 - pure intent. 2nd ball - big swing and shoulder pops out. Well done Ben.
Baylis enters. Whilst we knew Ben was a proper clubman and would have gone back in with just 1 working shoulder, we wanted Baylis to bat sensibly with Ash and take us over the line. Instead he sees a ball that was full and very straight and attempts a sweep. Thankfully for everyone watching, he middled it - a stupid but well executed shot. Shout out to Ash for his 15 off 13 which included running a 4 with Ethan earlier on.

We had done it. 295 chased and Chorleywood well and truly processed.

With everyone celebrating and enjoying a debrief of what a chaotic but great Sunday 1s game, my final highlight included Debs first reaction post win which was to ask the captain why he didn’t get a bowl. Given we had just chased 295, I think it worked itself out.
