St Albans Cricket Club Won by 43 runs

Match report CP hosted its potentially final ever Chess Valley League game as Kenton made the trip over. They similarly to the Saints had experienced penalty points this season (not quite as many) but were not unbeaten. Saints were 2 wins from 2 and looking to continue that streak. Skipper Lawrence won the toss and in typical CVL style chose to bat first.

Kenton’s and Murphy’s warm ups both ensued. Kenton’s may have been more sport specific but no doubt Murphy’s didn’t lack intensity. He and Murray strode out to the middle, a Chess Valley partnership for the ages. Murray took strike and took the attack immediately to the animated opening bowler. The first ball sent crashing straight past first slip in a well executed slip drive to get the ball rolling. Clearly the bowler was rattled and he sent down 2 full tosses to complete the first over, St Albans sat on 12-0 and Stu was motoring. Murphy took a bit longer to get going. He was struggling to get away the slingy action of Kenton’s opener called ‘Parmesan’ (yes that really was his name). Eventually when Murphy got going there were booming drives down the ground and the bloke just tried to bowl faster and faster. How JT didn’t wide the bouncer that went about 2 yards over Murphy’s helmet less head I’ll never know. However, all good things must come to an end. Murray was bowled around his legs by the slow one, and Murphy was bowled first ball to the off spinner. His excuse was that it turned, even though it bounced halfway down the strip.

Ahaan and Westy joined for some more cultural (boring) cricket. Westy in particular was allergic to playing the attacking shot. Once he’d finally got there the scoreboard started ticking again. Westy particularly keen to keep it this way ran one straight to square leg (the one bloke in their team who could field) and Ahaan was run out by half the length of the pitch. BBQ lit, and the slowest walk ever back to the Clarence Park pavilion then followed. So slow that Ahaan was overtaken by JT who had stayed out to umpire until the end of the over.

Any hopes and dreams of a rebuild were dashed. Josh cleaned up trying to hit the ball into the stratosphere off the off spinner. It just had to go. Wilton came in and showed some good intent to bat with Westy against the double spin duo. To be fair their left arm offie was actually pretty good and we all showed him far too much respect as he looked about 13. Transpired at the end he was actually 18, left a few out there.

Wilton chipped and then connected with one which threatened a lost ball. He then chipped one too many to the 13 year old. Lawrence then made it look incredibly easy before hitting a short ball straight at cover, West still felt bad for Ahaan so BBQ’d himself, and Adshead played one of the worst knocks ever seen at CP. Kenton’s mid wicket with the clearest dropped catch of the season winner, so bad that Adshead decided to give him another go on the next ball.

All of a sudden we found ourselves 200-8 with 10 overs to go. For some reason Kenton then decided to open the buffet and field like they had no hands. Baylis in particular cashed in on the lack of a cow corner, accumulating 36 runs before they finally realised that was his only shot. Chennells playing a brilliant support role to the aggressor Baylis, racking up 25 runs in the process.

Parmesan returned but the fielding hardly got any better. Kenton continuing to let anything and everything go straight through their hands or bodies. The wicket keeper at this point was beginning to get extremely animated as Baylis neared 50.

There was a slight heart in the mouth moment when a massive stumping appeal was turned down by umpire Murphy. The keeper about to erupt like a volcano at this point. Baylis clipped Parmesan off his legs to bring up his first ever 50 in any format of cricket, at 23 years old. Helmet and bat aloft and a roar from the verandah.

He was eventually bowled for 67 leaving JT stranded, poetic. 296 all out.

The bowling wasn’t very good and Andy needs me to write the match report quickly so here is the brief summary.

Adshead and Chennells bowled well, claiming 3 wickets between them. A well planned dismissal utilising the short wide one plucked straight into Murphy’s hands a real highlight in the opening spell.

Josh bowled well, Murphy tempted the number 5 into a genuinely awful shot which 3 players collectively all tried to catch. Somehow Josh held on. At drinks the non striker told him “you are so stupid, he was always going to try and make you do that.” Chin up.


We then bowled about 20 overs of absolute dross. Baylis, JT and Westy in particular. You certainly would not have thought Westy had to be at Heathrow Airport by 8pm. Dan did redeem himself with a fairly flair run out.

Wilton got the final wicket by a man who by the square leg umpires admission was the worst batsman he’s ever seen.

3 wins from 3, we’d actually be in a title race without the points deductions.
