Match report Gameweek 7 of the Chess Valley season brought us to the picturesque car wash of Harrow Town. Sadly, the jet washes didn’t quite reach the square, and we were met with an interesting wicket, with bare, dusty patches aplenty.

Harrow were already unhappy with us turning up at 11:50 for an early start, and Sandi then got told off by their umpire for standing on the wicket. Their skipper tried to make out that we had forfeited the toss and that they should bat first by default. Anyway, Lawrence called heads and opted to bat.

4th XI number 7 Murph and the 3s’ first-choice spinner Stu opened proceedings, with Murph booming a few signature cover drives before getting stumped Bairstow-style by their keeper, who was standing 10 yards back. Murph didn’t even attempt to get back. Stu departed shortly after, and the young guns Ahaan and Daiwik rebuilt nicely against the Harrow opening bowlers.

Harrow then turned to spin, with their left-arm orthodox bowler turning his first ball square, and the Saints’ lower order knew they could be in for a tough afternoon. Ahaan got a bit of a seed and snicked off to second slip for 31, leaving us 54-3. Daiwik was unlucky to York himself, getting bowled by the spinner’s quicker one, leaving us 67-4.

Twilts and Josh were now at the crease. Twilts did well to stay off strike against the spinner, then stupidly hit a very average over of seam for 20, somehow making the bowler’s hamstring go. He then chipped one to cover, Lawrence kicked one in front of middle, and the Saints were 130-7.

Although the deck was not great, a tiny leg-side boundary meant we needed at least 200 to make a game of it. Chen then batted brilliantly while Josh played second fiddle, gubbing some ugly shots to the short side. The two put on 92 for the eighth-wicket partnership, with Josh bringing up his 50 in the process and batting us back into the game.

By now, Josh was in full flow, dispatching any loose ball to the boundary, with JT holding up the other end and giving Josh the strike, now in the 90s. Sensibly making sure we batted the overs, he let JT face the penultimate over, who was clearly playing for his average, leaving the last ball of the penultimate set as a bit of a brain fade that was effectively a free hit.

Josh was now on 96 and had six balls to bring up his ton. The first ball floated up, Josh resisted and blocked it back to the bowler. The second was a little wide, and Josh slashed it through backward point for four, bringing up a maiden ton on a spicy wicket. In true Joshy style, he was then clean bowled attempting a reverse next ball. However, his innings had meant we had crept to 240, a very defendable total on a tricky wicket.

Murph and Chen opened the bowling, setting the standards for the second innings: two overs, 20-0. Harrow were very much on the front foot, utilising the hard ball, and got off to a bit of a flyer. Chen retired himself from Sunday bowling after three overs, and the skipper turned to Ahaan to find something from the surface. Three wickets in 13 balls from Murph and Ahaan had given the Saints hope. However, Murph’s final wicket may have actually lost us the game.

Harrow’s number five went 4, 4, 6, 6 off his first four balls, and Harrow had out-Chess-Valleyed St Albans at their own game, the batsmen seemingly getting better the more wickets we took. Ahaan then took another, and Harrow were 98-4 off 15. Well ahead of the rate, but four wickets down. Ahaan nearly got their gun bat out, but a tough caught-and-bowled chance burst through his hands. Josh got him a few overs later, just short of his 50.

The Harrow number seven then strode to the crease with a taped helmet and crushed his first ball for four. He looked pretty gun before deciding to smash his own stumps and getting bowled by an angry Stu with his second ball.166-6, and Harrow still needed another 75.

Daiwik then got one to roll, and Harrow were suddenly in a bit of trouble at 175-7. Sadly, from here, no Saints bowler could find another breakthrough, and the Harrow batters punished the bad ball as we hunted wickets.
A sad first loss of the season, and even worse, minus points for failing to provide an umpire, taking us to rock bottom of the table.

Two big wins needed to stay up.
