St Albans Cricket Club Invitational XI v President's Day on Sun 30 Aug 2026 at 11am
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 2 wickets

Match report After the deluge that had wiped out virtually an entire Saturday of league cricket, St Albans CC’s annual President’s Day enjoyed considerably better fortune on Sunday, with the rain staying away and a healthy Clarence Park crowd treated to a thoroughly entertaining game that went almost the full distance.

The President's XI , skippered by Matt Howeson, batted first and the declaration game started with the traditional nine man slip cordon as Jacob Winfield opened the bowling against the returning Mark Telkman. After a difficult start which saw the first 5 wickets fall for just 35 runs it looked like a good game was going to be a quick game but thanks principally to an outstanding innings from Jacob Roche a competitive total of 230 all out in 44 overs was eventually reached. Roche transformed the innings with a superb 95 from 83 balls, including 19 fours. He found valuable support from Alfie Button, who made 25, and Harry Saunders, whose 32 helped continue the recovery, before Matt Howeson chipped in with an unbeaten 16 towards the end.

The Club XI shared the wickets around with Jacob Winfield and club XI captain Ben Adshead doing the early damage with two wickets apiece, while Ciaran Walsh, Molly Green and Andy Saunders also finished with two each.

This being President’s Day, however, some of the more important contests were familial. Andy Saunders secured household bragging rights by dismissing son Harry, caught in the slips by Zach West, while later in the game Freya Witty also won the inter-generational stakes by trapping her dad James LBW to the delight of teammates and spectators alike.

After an excellent lunch provided by club sponsors Tavah, the Club XI began their pursuit.

Andy Rudlin provided the backbone of the chase with a superb 76 from 90 balls, striking ten boundaries , while Sam Street contributed a valuable 37 as the Club XI kept themselves in the contest. But the President’s XI refused to let the game drift. Returning player Mark Telkman produced an excellent spell, taking 4-49 from 13.1 overs, while Matt Howeson added two wickets to his earlier runs.

At 176 for eight, the Club XI looked to in trouble and the game appeared to be swinging back towards the President’s XI but Rory Law and James Rosson had other ideas. Law produced an unbeaten 43 from 47 balls, while Rosson counter-attacked with 23 not out from just 17. Together they added the decisive runs to take the Club XI to 232 for eight in the 48th and final over to secure a two-wicket victory in a game that remained competitive right to the end.
It was an appropriately close finish to one of the highlights of the club calendar, but President’s Day is always about considerably more than the result. A great crowd came down to Clarence Park throughout the day, the bar enjoyed excellent takings and, most importantly after Saturday’s extraordinary weather, the rain stayed away and allowed a full day’s cricket to take place.

Congratulations too go to Dan Rosson for an impressive victory in the boundary bowls competiton.

Particular thanks go to Tavah for providing a superb lunch, to everyone who came down to watch and support the club, and to all the former and returning St Albans players who came back to Clarence Park and helped make the occasion a success. Thanks also go to umpires Nick Hall and Tim Harvey and to scorer Claire Odgers.

Finally, huge thanks to Club Captain Matt Howeson for bringing the whole thing together and organising another really enjoyable President’s Day.

Good cricket, old friends, a busy clubhouse, family bragging rights and a close finish: not a bad way to spend a Sunday at Clarence Park.
