Match report To round out the season, our mighty Sunday Soldiers welcomed prodigal son Jonny Hall to Clarence Park, bringing with him a fun format as a welcome change of pace to our usual 40 over matches. A T16 test format was implemented, with skipper Ciaran Walsh deciding to reverse the SACC batting order between innings, so as to ensure everyone got as much of a bat as possible. A true people's champion. Having won the toss after Jonny called heads like a fool, Walsh elected to bat first and sent young talents Finn Newton and Xander Molvik into the fray.

Newton started well, going with the correct intent for a T16: he smoked a few fours with venom and facilitated sharp running between the sticks to tack 19 onto our tally. Xander was the first casualty, finding himself bowled for 1, while Newton followed shortly after thanks to a sharp catch. Dulon and Altaf took up the bat, with the latter wasting no time in dispatching the ball to the boundary. Dulon was unfortunate to find himself with a duck, another two sharp catches sending Dulon and Altaf back to the shed.

Fret not, dear reader: the biceps are here. Ben 'Biceps' Hingston dove in headfirst, accompanied by Debshali 'Debs' Sinharoy. Hingston isn't one to hang about, as well all well know: he took to the task with a gleeful Australian malice, racking up a blistering 44 featuring nine 4s. The 50 retirement mark was fast approaching, the scorers preparing champagne for our local Adonis, and- wait, umpire Dulon's decided he absolutely hates Ben, ominously raising the finger to dismiss Biceps via LBW! Biceps' eyes widened in horror, his mouth agape, staring at Dulon: "how could you do this to me?" was all our muscled Aussie could say. With even some of the fielders questioning the quality of the LBW appeal, Biceps trudged his way back to his friends, vowing vengeance upon Dulon come next season. Debs would depart shortly after in a much less dramatic fashion, finding his stumps akimbo after an absolute seed. It's worth noting that, two balls prior to this, Debs had swung particularly hard at a ball that he presumably wanted to put on the moon: he didn't connect, but his bat did go flying over the heads of the slip cordon, with some spectators dryly noting that his bat went further than some people's shots today.

Next up to bat was Walsh, and I think we'll leave it there.

Vivek Deswal and Andy 'Rear of the Year' Melling took up arms, with Vivek surprising us all following some serious pinch hitting from our opening bowler. He racked up a swift 20 before being caught, and Melling joined him back in the hutch following a smokeshow of a 6. Daiwik Khedekar and Ahaan Dean would see out our innings, with Ahaan wrapping up proceedings in style. He came in to face the final ball of the innings, with the sage words of his captain ringing in his ears: "go with intent." Captain, leader, visionary: Ahaan did as he was told, smashing a lusty 4 off this one final ball to bring our total to 118 after our full 16 overs.

No dilly dallying: straight back out there, with Vivek and and Debs kicking off proceedings with a blistering opening spell. Our heads were somewhat spun when we glanced at the scoreboard and noticed that the bats were steaming through our total, having scored 34 after just two overs. Oh dear. While Vivek and Debs were bowling well, these were bats with their eyes in and going with intent. Things started to settle somewhat when Vivek bowled the first opener, followed shortly by Debs dismissing their incoming number 3, thanks to a firm hold from Hingston behind the stumps. The pair took a blow, allowing Walsh and Melling to take over. The pair did a decent job of keeping the score down as best they could, but the batting depth in Jonny's team was really starting to show. Walsh managed to claim one wicket via a well-watched grab from Dulon, while Melling claimed 2 more, another Hingston catch and a clean bowled wicket allowing us a sigh of relief. Daiwik and Ahaan bowled the death, Daiwik managing to claim one more wicket before the innings came to a close.

A 41 run lead for the Hall XI. Not as bad as we were expecting after those first two overs, and really quite manageable given the quality of batting and bowling at our disposal. As mentioned, the batting order was reversed, and so our specialist death bowlers, Ahaan and Daiwik, took up arms.

Ahaan continued the aggressive intent he had demonstrated during the final ball of the first innings, notching a crucial 17, whereas Daiwik was unfortunate to fall to a catch that left us all breathless. Ahaan fell to yet another catch, ushering Melling and Debs to the crease. Melling was able to tack on another 4, while Debs echoed Ahaan's aggression, racking up a quickfire 16. Melling was then bowled and ANOTHER catch claimed Debs, making way for Hingston and Walsh.

Walsh approached the crease, with umpire Melling gleefully informing him that he's on for a "King Pair" should he receive another golden duck today, as he had done earlier. Walsh looked back blankly, having never heard this expression before, requesting elaboration from the bowler and ignoring Melling. He then managed to knock a fiery single, and his next ball he absolutely leathered it (into his own stumps). Meanwhile, Hingston was busy doing very Hingston things: he managed to knock his 55 with ease now that Dulon wasn't there to stop him, retiring in glee and consolidating his place as top runscorer for the season. Altaf and Newton were our next form of attack, the former knocking a fast 8 and the latter adding on 9. Vivek, Dulon and Xander closed out the attack, notching 3, 4 and 6 respectively.

No delays again: we took up the ball and got to work, the oppo requiring 118 to win. Xander and Altaf took the new ball and made an impact, each claiming a wicket and each watching Walsh fail to catch anything off their bowling (he leads from the front, as you can tell). Newton and Dulon were next up, with Newton proving himself as an impact sub, claiming a wicket on his very first ball. He would later take another, and Dulon supported him ably from the pavilion end.

Finally, our specialist death bowlers, Ahaan and Daiwik, came out to play. With roughly 25 required, the pair bowled lovely spells, keeping runs tight and hard-fought. Eventually, we reached the final over, with Ahaan needing to stop the oppo from scoring 8. Dot. Dot. Four (dammit). WICKET! A well-watched catch from our skipper put us back in the race, with Clarence Park erupting at the sight. No one, on the pitch or off it, backed Walsh to take this catch, given the precedent he had already set for himself, but, like Walsh insisted at the time: "call me the postman, all I do is f****** deliver." Anyways. Ahaan continued bowling, and the scores eventually came level with one ball remaining. Ahaan bowls. The batter misses. Hingston claims it. The batters attempt one final, desperate run. Hingston throws the ball to Ahaan. Ahaan runs them out. Drawn game.

No, no, no. We ain't doing that. Walsh conferred with Hall, and the two agreed that this situation called for a super over. Given his immense death bowling just now, Walsh thought it only right that Ahaan continue this spell. Ahaan did indeed manage to bowl some lovely deliveries, but the over went for 14 runs in total. We sent Hingston and Debs out there to chase this total, but some quick wickets (one of which being Dulon against Hingston again) sounded the death knell, with a Hall XI victory.

A fun game with a welcome change of pace format-wise, played in excellent spirits against a lovely opposition. Laughs were shared, beers were exchanged and a good time was had by all (bar one of the Hall XI who snapped his finger, blood everywhere and the bone visible, until hero Pat Walsh drove him to Lister Hospital). These were a good bunch of lads with good chat and good cricketing ability: we look forward to welcoming them back next season to exact some revenge.
