Match Report By : Harpenden CC
Harpenden 202 for 9 (53 overs) St Albans 197 for 9 (47 overs)
Saturday saw the first league meeting of local rivals Harpenden and St Albans, certainly since 1974, and possibly the first ever. As with most local derbies it was a gripping and hard-fought contest, with the outcome uncertain until the final ball had been bowled. Harps skipper Mike Howard lost the toss to fellow Scot Ian McKinlay who chose to field. Simon Murray and Iroshan de Silva made a promising start to Harpenden's innings, posting 42 before Murray was caught by ex-Herts captain Nick Gilbert off the bowling of Peter Crews. Howard and de Silva built on this foundation and Howard reached his fifty in the fortieth over but then sacrificed himself to a run out two overs later. Harps still looked set for a large total at 158 for 2, but there followed a total collapse of the remaining batting with nobody else reaching double figures. Luckily de Silva stood firm throughout the mayhem, stroking the ball to all parts of a very defensive field. He survived a dropped catch and a missed stumping, and had reached 112 not out when the innings closed after 53 overs at 202 for 9. Zeechan Butt was the leading wicket taker for St Albans with figures of 4 for 71 off 23 overs.
The Harps skipper saved the cost of a new ball by bowling throughout with the old one, opening with de Silva's spin and John Kerley's medium pace. This tactic helped to contain the run rate, but St Albans made a good start losing their captain, run out by a deft piece of Harpenden fielding from Mark Fettes, when the score was 41. Next to go was Gilbert, who spooned a catch to Dakin at short extra cover off Kerley for 4, and he was soon followed by the other opener Matt Howson, bowled by spinner Matt Mardle in his first over for Harpenden. This left thevisitors at 57 for 3 after 20 overs. Mardle soon claimed another wicket which brought captain Phil Caley to the crease. He and Stewart Douglas then made a concerted effort to wrest the game away from Harpenden. The partnership was broken when Simon Arnold took a brilliant tumbling catch at deep square leg, just inches from the ground, to give Mardle his third wicket and send Caley back to the pavilion having made 60 out of a partnership of 104. soon followed by Douglas, just one run short of his fifty, in the second run out dismissal of the innings. This left St Albans needing just 21 to win with 16 balls left. De Silva, who had replaced Kerley, quickly despatched another batsman deceiving him with his change of pace and hitting the stumps. St Albans started the last over at 197 for 7, needing just 6 runs to win but de Silva had other ideas. He started his over with a wicket and followed it three balls later with a second, both bowled. The number 11 denied Harpenden victory by blocking the final two deliveries but the result could easily have gone the other way if Richard O'Toole, who had scored 12 off 7 balls had managed to get on strike. Mardle finished with 3 for 61 off 14 overs but man of the match was de Silva with 3 for 71 off 20 overs to add to his invaluable contribution with the bat. This draw left Harpenden in joint second place in the table.
