St Albans Cricket Club 3XI v Berkhampstead II on Sat 14 May 2016 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets

Match report The IIIs showed improvement over their round one showing, but for a second week in a row failed to do well enough with the bat, and then suffered at the hands of single opposition batsman.

A chilly northerly wind swept across the Sandpit Lane Cricket Ground as Walker won the toss and chose to bat. Early wickets left Saints on the back foot (literally in Jones' case, bowled when one stayed low), but a recovery of sorts followed, Scott leading the way with a positive knock of 43. Contributions from Adshead (22) and Ahmed (a quick fire 16) kept the scoreboard ticking. After three quick wickets fell, Everdell knocked the ball around for 19 - though in the process did a pre-match injury no favours, leaving the team a bowler short. A total of 146 looked under par, wickets falling when the batsmen allowed themselves a little too much freedom, which was disappointing. Berkhamsted bowled decently, their discipline highlighted by the absence of wides and no balls.

There were echoes of the previous week’s one man show at Langleybury in what followed as opener Debonnaire lead Berko’s charge. But whereas the earlier innings was measured, this was a demolition. Anything slightly short was smited through the on side while the rarer full deliveries were tonked over the top. St Albans bowlers looked powerless to stop the onslaught. All good things must come to an end though and the last ball of the 9th over saw Debonnaire’s demise: the opening partnership of 81 (at 9 an over!) dominated by his 74. St Albans went to the delayed tea break shell shocked but not without hope.

It was not to be. Although a few wickets fell - including a fine catch by keeper Thomas - the sixty odd runs required after this opening stanza were achieved without much fuss. Dean bowled well, beating the bat on numerous occasions to claim 2/38; the best of the bowlers. The skipper was pleased to note that the fielding showed improvement.

Some sense of gains then, but more needs to be done to turn this losing start into performances worthy of victory. Already the IIIs are falling behind the Is, IIs and IVs, who each recorded wins on the day; reporting a second loss back at the club was not ideal. Better next time?
